G-man Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 In the late 90s turkeys were everywhere and so were turkey hunters. I roosted a bird the night before and slip in nice and close 30 yards or so i can see the limb moving as the bird starts gobbling.. Suddenly i hear an owl hoot down the ridge . The bird answers with a thunderous gobble!! Another hoot and another response.. then quiet. 100 yards closer a few minutes later a hoot again! Again the bird in front of me answers with a double and triple gobble.. .. aĺl is quite then 100 yards closer a hoot again!! Again my bird responds.. im getting upset now as obviously a hunter is working down the ridge toward me and my roosted bird. This continues several more times untill the hoot comes about 70 yards away.. i then decide its not worth neing shotnover so i clearly yell hunter here go away!. The woods are quiet for 15 min or more then my bird gobbles again on its own im elated!! I dodnt spook it!.. then suddenly 50 yards to my left a hoot again.. now im pissed!! Guy is sneaking around me! So i pull out a crow call and just blow a constant loud extended blast not sounding like any crow.. guy has to know its a hunter!! Next thin i knkw a huge barred owl lands in front of me on a stump not 5 ft away and hoots right at me . My bird gobbles the owl flys and turkey flys... the who time im upset and yelling at an owl to leave thinking it was a person... sigh.... . ATbuckhunter, Bucksnbows, Doebuck1234 and 9 others 3 9
maddie Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 don't feel like the lone ranger because it happened to me also.
mowin Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 I once had a tom coming in from a long way off. He's finally in the same field, and getting closer. When he crests the hill, he'll be 30yrds. He's close enough to hear him drumming. I hear a noise to my right and see something only 15 yards off. It's a friggin skunk. Now I'm trying to scare off the skunk before I spook the tom. Dam skunk wouldn't leave. Kept getting closer. At probably 15' he started to turn and raise his tail. I was up and running in a split second. I look back just in time to see him scurry down a hole only a couple feet behind the tree I was sitting against. Good thing I was in my 20's, if that were to happen now, I'd would have to leave much sooner or get sprayed. dmandoes and G-man 2
phade Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 My most embarrassing hunt was a deer hunt. I missed a bruiser of a buck while we were running dogs at the club (VA). I was on the gas line cut and it was long. Property was 4,400 acres continuous for 42 guys in the club. Stands were every 150 ish yards. Everyone has CBs communicating and they tell me to get ready. I hear the dogs, know a buck is coming my way, and get ready as they said. That buck came across that gas line like Usain Bolt. I missed that buck at maybe 10-15 yards. I can still see the dust high over his back from my bullet hitting dirt. CB crackles…the kid missed it. It was a a giant and he missed right below him! Followed by all kinds of comments. Running dogs is an operation and missing the big one was frowned upon, highly. Truth be told I can even still see the bulging of the buck’s eyes it was so close. ‘Twas a long day back at the clubhouse... That was only the second buck I had ever shot at. Thankfully I got the first. Buck was killed by a neighboring club. Scored 165 as a clean 10. To date…I have never killed a clean 10 decades later. dmandoes, G-man and Steuben Jerry 3
2BuckBizCT Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 (edited) My most embarrassing actually wasn't my fault, but felt like it was. My Dad and I went to Texas in November 2000 for a deer hunt (I was 16 years old)- still to this day my only whitetail hunt outside of NY/CT/PA. Anyway, it was a cheap hunt and no fences of course. Anyway, you get what you pay for and each day we would get dropped at a box blind and see more giant cows the size of elephants than deer. We brought lunch and stayed dark to dark each day to better our odds, but still no action. It was us 2 in camp, and 9 guys from georgia. 1 guy from Georgia shot a typical 6pt that was like 65". The other 8 shot nothing. On the last evening hunt, my Dad and I see a giant (to us) 8pt buck. He stops at like 200 yards wide open and I shoot. The buck doesn't move, so I do it again. I do it 4 times and the buck just keeps looking around at the sounds of the shots. My Dad hands me his rifle, but I'm disgusted so I hand it back to him. We both assume I have buck fever even though I felt super steady. My Dad shoots the buck and he drops dead right there. He scores 130" on the button- just an awesome 8pt. Anyway, the next morning before our flight we shoot my rifle and it couldn't hit paper at 50 yards. Somehow the scope got badly jarred during the trip and it wasn't from the flight because we sighted in to check it after landing. or maybe one of the GA guys messed with it? who knows. But then for a few more years before I moved out the house I had to stare at that buck on the wall everyday! Edited March 1, 2023 by 2BuckBizCT Steuben Jerry, E J, dmandoes and 3 others 6
lucky118 Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Had to use my crossbow to gently push a persistant porcupine off my boot as I sat with my back to a tree. He really wanted up that tree. I finally pushed him around to the back and he climbed up above me and crapped on me. Porcupines are a holes. Steuben Jerry, ATbuckhunter, G-man and 4 others 1 6
dbHunterNY Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 first time hunting out west in 2008 where it's very flat. i'm from the Adirondack foothills but now in NW Oklahoma. we did a drive by down a red dirt road to view a survey ribbon on the road bank that marked my spot to head into a ground blind not visible from the road. right at the crest of the hill. easy. next morning, on opening day, and before daylight I was dropped off well down the road. all i had to do was walk the road until i found the ribbon. walked and walked. i could see what appeared to be the top of the hill as very first light started breaking. "damn i must have passed it!", so i turned around and headed back down the hill. did this over and over past first light and well after sunrise. pissed i couldn't find my spot, I kept walking and the crest of the hill kept growing and staying in front of me. turns out the topo had me deceived thinking i was at the top of the hill when i still had maybe 100 yards more to go. i was practically there at least 3 times. a coyote was barking at me the whole time. Robhuntandfish Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 (edited) I was driving by my hunting land and I see a Tom out on the very inside edge of the brush line in the corner of the property. So I go home and get my turkey gear on and head right back over. Now to get nearby I have to go way around on the backside otherwise I will be right out in the open. So I walk the way around and setup in a trail about 100 yards back with a deke and call a little. No response. I wait and try a few more times for about an hour. Nothing. I decide I'm going to sneak up the trail and peak out into the field edge and see if I can eyeball him. So slow and steady I get out there and I see the movement and the dark outline thru the brush. I see a spot I want to get to and try to call. I stop there and sit down, get ready and grab the binos. I look thru the binos to see that this Tom turkey is a black garbage bag! Lol it was caught in the brush and with the wind would move a little and from a distance I swore it was a Tom. Yes I hunted a garbage bag. Although I guess it was successful as I took it and threw it away. He snuck up only to realize the farmer had spread manure and he was looking at a clump of crap. His daughter busted his chops big time, saying he went up to " shoot the shit", lol. The_Real_TCIII Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 I passed a strutter in a field, drove around the block and parked. Got dressed, walked a half mile back and then went into super stalk mode. Setup and started calling, nothing. Got closer and it was a black garbage bag hung up on some brush Robhuntandfish, dmandoes and Steuben Jerry 3

Ncountry Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Not my story, but one that was told to me.. Honest..lol.. He was wearing coveralls and had to take a crap. He also failed to make sure he didn't $%% in them before pulling them back up over his shoulders.. dbHunterNY and Steuben Jerry 2

Kept smelling it but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. His wife got a toilet seat off of a baby's potty and glued it to a old hood. Lol. Ncountry and dmandoes 2
Farflung Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 turkey hunting about 20 years ago. Got in real early, sitting off a RR tracks in the woods. Heard some owl hooting, says to myself "that sure sounds like a guy with one ot those wooden owl hooters", walked towards the RR. Along comes another hunter, I identify myself, ask him whose property he was on and he decided to leave. About that time I hear a bird gobbling, I scoot along until I'm pretty close to him. I peek through a hedge row, and there is the gobbler. He is roosted in a cow pasture about 20 yards away in a very low branch in a black cherry tree. About then a dog barks, he gobbles. Car door slams, he gobbles. I'm squatted backwards on to my heels. The internal pressure in my guts builds up until I have to relieve it. I lean forward and a sonorous fart blows out, and he gobbles. In another 5 minutes the pressure builds up again, another fart erupts and he gobbles again. He flies down, I give a couple of low yelps, and he moves to the hedgerow I am in and into the abandoned RR bed. I passed on him, as he was going to be bird number 2 and I was hoping for something a little bigger. G-man 1
