Moog5050 Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 So I very wisely hid my keys to the cheap gun safe so that no one would find them, myself included. Any ideas on how best to open this thing?
Spaceman Spiff Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) If you plan on scrapping the safe the quickest way is to cut the side open. Steel is thin on the sides, an axe will probably go through it. Id take a demo saw to it. Edited March 17, 2023 by Spaceman Spiff
Jeremy K Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 (edited) A smaller key that fits inside ,jog it in and out quickly while applying pressure to turn it ,if the lock is cheap enough you can get them to turn . Most tool box locks work that way . Typically like a key for a master lock will work ,especially if it's worn down. Is it insulated ? If it's not you could also drill small holes around the lock cylinder to weaken it and just use a hammer and a drift to push the lock cylinder through. Edited March 17, 2023 by Jeremy K
G-man Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Can drill that lock out in less than a minute. Been there Splitear, cervidchasers and The_Real_TCIII 3
Moog5050 Posted March 17, 2023 Author Posted March 17, 2023 All good suggestions. Good news is that the only gun in that safe is my Turkey gun and most of you know how much I use it. Lol. So I just picked it up and moved it where I wanted. But I will likely drill it out at some point. If I drill the cylinder out, I assume I can just flip the latch over?

Been there We've done this on a few stack-on cabinets for which we had misplaced the key. If you can prove ownership (receipt) Stack-On can send you a replacement key. It's a process, but can be done as long as you can provide documentation.

I first learned this about 25 years ago when my dog jumped up on the door to the garage and flipped the deadbolt, locking out my wife and son. She called a locksmith who for a hefty fee put a 3/8" bit to it and opened the door in 20 seconds. Good to know. Moog5050 1

2BuckBizCT Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Why not just call stack-on? Unless you need something out of it right now, I'm sure they can help you open with a replacement key and keep the safe. Dogman 1

Bolt Action Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 If you're trying to not damage the safe in the process, maybe try a strong magnet to pull the bolts back?
