Public Land Etiquette

Recommended Posts

This Topic is blowing up on the NJ Sister Site! Even ol Fred Flintstone  left a response. That's me- lol!

Public Land Etiquette  not just for Deer Hunting- but for Spring Gobbler Hunting as well,Small Game, etc. Let's get it going and see if we can learn anything  from our collective Thoughts.

I will start with the Following.  One early Spring,I was out with my Brother  in law Mark  on a Public Field.  With scouting,I knew a good 4 Gobblers were in the area. 2 or 3 travelled together. With that knowledge we got in and set out a Hen Decoy at around  70 Minutes before Sunrise. At 60 minutes before Sunrise- it started to Brighten up in the East .

Just at that time period another Turkey Hunter was walking down the Field Line right at out position.  On seeing the Hen Decoy the Hunter  stopped and then continued  on past us and set up 50 yards down from Mark who was just on my Right.

  Legal - yes- Ethical- No.

Unknown  to Mark and,I " for the moment"- this hunter had a partner  who was set up a good 150 yards away and about 30 feet out from a field corner.

So the Gobbling started and since all 4 sounded like they were together, I popped out some Loud Gobbler Clucks on a 4" Double Slate. They started for the Field edge and popped out a good 80 yards away and started for the Hen Decoy.

That is when Mark and,I became aware of the " partner" near the Field corner who never called once mind you. The Toms were out of his range- but 3 magnum shots rang out. The last one with him running out.

   ARRGGGHHHH!

The Guy who plopped down 50 yards from Mark came out and walked down to his partner.

This was a clear case of- if,I can't kill these Gobblers- neither will you.  Both Mark and,I would have had easy shots very shortly.

  This happened  many years back.

If you have any stories to add on " Public Land Etiquette"- let's hear them.

Was a mile and a half back in the other night. Had a guy come up the mountain sweating and breathing hard. I whistled  at him and he waved then pointed to the top of the mountain. I waved him up. He put that much effort in might as well lol. Tho I never saw him come back so he might have died once he got there lol.
