What are you shooting?

  • Gun, choke, and shotshell?
  • Bow, arrow, and broadhead?
  • Crossbow, bolt and broadhead?

Remington 870 Magnum with a 26” ventilated barrel and Remington factory extra full choke pushing out 3” Winchester XXX copper plated 6 shot. It’s always been a deadly combo in that gun for me.

May can’t get here soon enough. This will be my third straight year not turkey hunting in NJ because our numbers are too low where I hunt them, so my buddies and I plan multiple trips to the Cooperstown area for May. I’ll add in some fishing on the West Branch D on my way up where I can stay with any one of several friends that retired in the area.

I hope the Turkey numbers are higher this year in North New Jersey. Last 3 Springs and just 1 Gobbler for me in NJ.

It started to turn sharply downward in ‘20 for Sussex County. We got 3” of icy snow and it dropped into the mid 20s and was windy as all get out on May 14th. That’s the very last day before “safe growing season” but late for that type of event. I didn’t see a single poult that spring. Few birds in the last two years as well. So I am giving them a break. They will rebound as they always do, but this is the worst I’ve seen on the same ground over the last 30 years.

Mossberg 835 12g  with ult turkey choke. Federal 5s 3".  Prob take it out once or twice to say I got out, but it's taken a few turkeys here and there.   Turkeys are few and far between on our property and the walleye will be calling my name.

Same setup, although I sometimes substitute #4s in either Winchester or Federal.
