The gobble call..

Not a call I use often, but it's works in certain situations.

Now I'm not worried about calling in other hunters. Everything around the areas I hunt are posted, and the surrounding landowner either don't allow hunting, or we get along and respect the boundaries.

One time I had a pair of yotes rush into the flock of several toms and hens, scattering them in every direction.  I moved to the next field, and gobbled several times.  Within seconds, I had a response. 5 min later he was flopping.

I'll often use a gobble in early morning especially if I'm not hearing any gobbles.  Late morning a gobble will often get a response and then I can formulate a plan to get closer.

usually do not use the gobbler call after a bad experience I had in Iowa. But one day in NY, I was working a bird and had to leave for a mandatory work meeting. As I was walking away, I spot another hunter who had heard the  gobbles almost running across the field to the woodlot where the bird was. I was like, darn it, that bird is real killable. I  took out my gobbler call, shook it a couple of times and then fired my shotgun into the ground.  The other hunter basically sagged, like he was deflated, turned around and walked away. Next day I came back and killed that bird.

Trying to learn to gobble on a homemade tube call, little tricky.. for me anywyas lol

I've got a primos shaker.  It's very realistic sounding.

I've had a few tube calls over the yrs, but a diaphragm call is much easier for me.

i've got the Primos shaker gobble call but rarely even carry it. Will Primos Signature diaphram, bat wing cut, or other comfortable fitting and easy blowing call. Set the seal good with a couple soft yelps, then start slow.... took a - took a - took a. work up to going faster and faster. if you screw up you end up sounding like a weak gobbling jake that could get his but kicked. don't choke. you're only using it to amplify sound.

I don’t own one, but maybe 25 years ago a buddy loaned me his and said try it if nothing else works.  I put out my decoys just into the woods from a cut corn field and was calling with a box or a slate most likely at the time. Another buddy and I had a gobbler sounding off any time I called, but he was clearly hung up.  I tried being quiet for a long time and nothing. After scratching the slate and getting another response but no commitment to walk the maybe 150 yards from the hedgerow he was holding in across the cut field and down to our decoys, I remembered the Jake gobbler tube. I used it once and damned if that bird didn’t come charging out right for us.  Halfway across, he slammed on the breaks and ran back into the hedgerow never to be seen again.
My buddy and I looked at each other trying to figure out what went wrong when the neighbor comes flying into the field in his truck. He heard the bird and came to poach it from his truck. Potter County, PA where teeth are optional.

I’m wondering if that falls into hunter harassment. Shooting a gun to impact another hunter’s hunt?

This call is made out of an old 35mm film canister, with balloon cuts for reeds. Cheap and homemade.. but if done right sounds even better than the shaker call. I have one of those as well. Im not super crazy about it.. I can tell the difference, but not sure the turkey's can lol

That is a Tough Call. I know the exact Feeling  though.

Years back,I  had 2 Young Guys pass me on a Field Trail. This area had a good 6 or so Fields.

Once they passed me they started to race walk off the Trail and into the Field while going to the right. One Young Guy kept turning around to look at me as,I continued  up the Field Trail. I knew they wanted to Set- up on the extreme  right of the next Rockwall where a Gobbler usually  Roosted.

Lately though,I heard him up on the extreme  Left in the next field. And,I had 50 yards left to walk when they passed me and started to Double-Time the walk.

Sure enough that Gobbler was on my side and no more then 70 yards old.  I hit him with Loud Yelping.  He Gobbled- he Double Gobbled. I knew he would fly down soon as no Hens were with him.

Then--- S@$!-- 2 "Hens" Yelping Loud at less then 100 yards down the Rockwall .

The " Hens" started to move down the Rockwall to where,I was Loudly Yelping...

                  &%$!

That Gobbler Flew Down and came my way. The " Hens" were getting closer..

I had a easy Shot here. Instead,I stood up and Spooked him on Purpose.

Last thing,I wanted was 2 Unethical  Guys with loaded Shotguns approaching me on the Gobbler Kill and the Confrontation  that would follow.

Shooting into the ground is another way,I guess. Alot of Guys would start Singing Dixie.

Are you allowed to stalk turkeys in NY?  It is illegal in NJ as being too dangerous.

I've made a few 35mm calls over the yrs. They definitely work.

From a distance the shaker call sounds very realistic compared to how it sounds next to you.  It's like the old push button calls, most sounded ok in front of you, but at a distance they sounded great.

in the land of subjective opinion, i think that's fair game. now if you shoot with the intent to scare birds off another hunters set, then IMO that's entirely different. Discussion about the poacher from the truck can be comfortably left unsaid, as everyone's likely on the same page.
