Phantom
It has been reported that there were 700 to 800 moose in New York State in 2019 and that the numbers have remained relatively stable since then. The reason for this lack of change in population size is currently unknown. Anyone know anything new on this? and how many moose would it take for them to open a season on them in ny state. Ogee
That would require a Legislative action (its not in DECs’ hands) I dont think I would worry too much about it, cause that ain’t gonna happen. If hunter vs hunter on things like crossbow is nasty, the anti hunter groups will surpass your wildest dreams if you think they would let that happen. dbHunterNY, GreeneHunter and Skillet 1
ATbuckhunter
Things aren't looking too hot for moose at this point. The herd is stable, but I wouldn't expect a moose season anytime soon. There needs to be logging done in the ADK's to help promote better habitat. Now that's only one part of the picture as well. There's a problem with brain worm that don't bother whitetails, but do kill moose. There's also a problem with winter ticks. Moose evolved in an environment that didn't have many if any ticks. They tend to pick up so many and try to rub them off by rubbing on trees. Well It causes them to pull most of their hair out and they end up dying in the winter time. Too many negatives in todays day and age to have a hauntable population. Id love to see a season but until they start logging, I wouldn't expect one. Based on how the parks are set up, I wouldn't expect logging any time soon if ever. Phantom and grampy
Buckmaster7600
Spending 60+ days a year hunting the Adirondacks and covering a lot of miles I average 2 moose to every deer I see. That obviously doesn’t mean there’s more moose than deer but the numbers are definitely going up from what I’ve seen in my life time. grampy, Ncountry and GreeneHunter

You are seeing moose that have never been hunted and have absolutely no fear of man. Also, I don’t think moose are known as a particularly challenging species to hunt, in areas where hunting them is legal. They must have a pretty extensive and growing range up there in the Dacks. Don’t you spend most of your time down by the SE corner of the park ? They have recently made their way up to the NW corner, by my in-laws place. grampy
I've seen moose in VT. Have yet to see one in NY. Gotta get up into the Dac's more!

They’re not hunted but that doesn’t mean they walk up to me looking to be pet. I think they’re just much easier to see especially once there is snow! I live in SE corner but don’t hunt here much. I’ve seen moose sign about everywhere I’ve been in the ADK’s Edited April 7, 2023 by Buckmaster7600 Wolc123

mowin
I don't think I've seen a moose in NY. But about 20 yrs ago, I seen something from across one back road and field to another back road and field. I couldn't figure out what I was looking at, because it was probably 3/4 of a mile away . I drove around to where I seen the critter, only to see a truck pulled off the side of the road and the lady was pointing into the field. She said a moose just crossed in front of me, please tell me you seen it because my husband is going to say I bumped my head. So I think I seen a moose, but I can only go by some chick that bumped her head.. dbHunterNY
the problem exists that without conflict NYS legislators heavily weighted to NYC won't let anything pass to allow for regulated taking of moose. people will bitch that they want to see them up in the adirondacks and hunting will prevent that. until they start hitting them with cars and having negative encounters with moose, i don't think we'll see even a DMP style lottery based season. if it does happen the early hunting could be awesome. buddy of mine has gotten some great trail cam pictures of some. We've even had them show up for years around Washington and Northern Rensselaer counties.
