Exactly. There was 60-70 home invasions by BEARS in CT last year.

If it's anything like NY they just get an appearance ticket then released.

Connecticut is where NJ was maybe 20 years ago with black bears.  We have allowed politics to enter what should be the management of a game animal by the state's wildlife agency, but we allow Governors to intervene and shut that down at times.  In the meantime, we have had one person killed and several mauled in the most densely populated state in the nation with the highest bear density anywhere black bears live in the northern third of NJ.  And with no hunt for a couple of years and then the late hunt last year that was ineffective due to bad timing, we are overrun worse than ever.

I've hunted upstate NY for the last 10 years and have yet to see a live bear although we got some cell cam photos last year.  In NJ, I have seen as many as 8 in a 3 hour bowhunt.  And that is 8 unique animals, not the same bears walking by more than once.  CT needs to add a hunt and not wait until their numbers are too high.  Our bears in this greater east coast area have a very high fecundity rate.  NJ sows average 3.2 live births every other year.  And we have had bear issues in every single county in this state, including far south Cape May County.

Agree with everything you said.  Last year a few towns over a kid got mauled and his grandpa IIRC saved him. But on the other side, it didn't help that a cop shot a bear nearby that had its own facebook page.

We've had similar with a bear called Peddles that had injured both front paws.  He was shot during a hunting season or so is believed and he had his own Facebook page.  Plenty of empty outrage.  We have a highly active anti-bear hunting contingent in NJ, and they are some very scary people.  Believe it or not, one of the main culprits is a NY City College economics professor that gets himself arrested at a NJ bear check station every year, yet does no civil disobedience against NY state's annual bear hunt likely because it's set in stone in NY and not in any way controversial and in the news all the time.

Yup and great point. You can legally hunt bears in Westchester County (3S), but not CT or NJ is absurd.

I mean, seriously, have you been to that place? It's like they have a hierarchy of important people, and apparently Hillary Clinton is at the top. I guess she's too important to be eaten by bears or something. But the rest of us? Well, we're fair game. Especially those poor souls from Connecticut. I mean, who cares about them, right? It's like they don't even count. But hey, at least the bears are well-fed, right?

Be Proactive in Black Bear Country! I already posted up on Tuesday my interaction with possibly 2 Black Bears.

100% of the time over the Decades, Bears are Sprinting away from me. A good 12+ up close and personal meetings in the Deep Woods. Some were Big Bruins.

So on Tuesday at my 2nd setup and watching a Black Bear cruise on over to the area,I was first calling from and with ALL Turkeys Silent now- time to go.

Be on the Alert if a Black Bear parallels  your course!  Check the pics in my Thread- That is what this guy did. Medium Bear - possibly  160lbs+

There might have been 2 Bears as,I had to circle around that high point and catch the uphill Rocky Trail. 1 minute later- the Bear is at the bottom looking up at me.

 Always seek the High Ground!

Curious Bears- Possibly. Or another Reason....

Take no chances and never be complacent  and watch your back trail.

I got a big dose of the Adrenaline  Dump. Arms and Legs felt 3 Times as powerful and light as feathers.

About the Adrenaline  Dump- no instructor or Military  will teach you about this- so,I will.

99% of people view " The Shakes" with Terror and that will freeze you on the Spot!   You need to Breath Deep and Slowly-- Calm Mind/ Calm Body to control the Adrenaline Dump.

Turkey Fever/ Deer Fever- that is a mild Adrenaline  Dump.

×10 when alone in the Woods with a Black Bear. No matter how Tall,Heavy, or Tough you think you are.

Someone throw me a Dime for this free info.

When Hiking/ Hunting,I often carry the Storm Whistle,2 Good Knifes. Spray down with Deep Woods Off/25% DEET. Bears don't  like that Smell. I also carry in Sterling Forest/ North Jersey- Cayenne Pepper.  Bear interaction- Dump some on the Back of your Neck. Throw some in the Air. I have seen numerous  Hikers on the Appalachian  Trail with long range Wasp Stopper.

Respect the Black Bears and give them Room-- they might be hopping too as far as being near to you.

I had one under 10 yards last year while bowhunting. I took videos. it was an adrenaline rush for sure. I drew on it a few times too for fun.

After 12 encounters up close with a black bear, it is normal to still have some fear. But once you hit hundreds of close encounters and you take time to watch their behavior closely, you will likely lose that fear. It will be replaced with respect at first that will change to a basic hatred of them as they do damage to your property, trail cams, and do so much to kill fawns in Spring.

Most of the time I have close encounters, I am completely unarmed. At most, I have my Hoyt which is a poor weapon should you ever be charged. I have never once worried about any bear. I regularly see them within 30 yards, have had them climb a few feet up my stand, have watched them spar with each other, have been “woofed” at and had them teeth pop at my presence, have been bluffed charged, and have had them walk towards me out of curiosity. I don’t bother to count, but I hunt perfect bear habitat in Sussex County, NJ. Easily dealt with 100 bears in my 30+ sits last fall. Easily. Most was 8 different bears in a 3 hour bow hunt. That day I got to see a sow bluff charge a large boar because she had two cubs with her.  Then a few minutes before dark and surrounded by those same four bears, I climbed down and walked right at them telling them to go away. And that’s exactly what they did. If any bear was demonstrating actual aggression towards me, I wouldn’t be so cavalier in my approach. It is very normal when we kill a deer to have a buddy keeping bears away while the other guy tags and guts the deer.

The boar in the photo was maybe a 350 pounder. He was fast asleep when I took that picture. I’m at the base of one of my bow stands and he’s at about 23 yards. I said, “hey bear” and he woke up and just looked at me. So I said it again, louder, and he bolted in the opposite direction. That’s a very normal afternoon in the woods for me here in northwest NJ.

I am there already as,I Hike Year Round.  Not much Fear at all. Fighting Full Contact in my Youth and working Self Defense with Hundreds of Men over the Decades gives one a hard earned Courage.
