Popular Post E J Posted November 19, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 19, 2022 I shot this buck around 9 this morning. It was the sixth buck I saw. The others were little guys. It snuck up on me by walking straight into me behind a big split maple in front of the stand. When I saw him he was about 12 yards out. I went to grab my gun and he spooked. I took one shot at him as he was running across a field. Luckily he stopped on the far side of the field 80-100 yards out. I shot again and he didn't do 15 yards after that shot. I watched him go down and then kept watching for 10 more minutes to make sure he wasn't going to try to get up take off. My buddy I was hunting with missed one even bigger a few minutes after I shot this one. nywaw, 518BowSlayer, 9jNYstarkOH and 40 others 43
Popular Post Upstate Nerdneck Posted November 19, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 19, 2022 (edited) Shot him around 1:08 pm. Was on my way to the stand, sneaking down the logging road. Stopped to glass the new plot, though I heard steps over the hill directly below me, then the wind picked up. Slid off the logging road and behind a big hemlock, started glassing. Took ten minutes for me to get a clear shot at him. I think if I'd known how good he was I would have missed! I did my job, the old 700 did it's job. He went about 40 yards. Drag was 400 feet elevation down switchback logging roads that were like dragging him over sandpaper. My dad and our hunting buddy picked me up at the bottom of the hill. Popular Post mowin Posted November 19, 2022 Author Popular Post Posted November 19, 2022 My brother Dan wanted to hunt badly. He's 70 and is battling pancreatitis cancer. Knowing this might be his last hunting season, I moved a ground blind the other day so I could drive up to it and drop him off. Since I got a buck this morning, I decided to sit with him this afternoon. Got in the blind around 2:30, and at 3:00 a few does stepped out at the farthest point about 120y. Was unsure of the shot, so we left and came back a hr later after he warmed up. My great nephew, his grandson, Kayden came off stand to help me look. Turns out the shot was perfect and she only went 60yrds. Chemo pump hanging by his hip didn't stop him from doing what he loves to do. Phantom, MPHunter, boo711 and 58 others 46 15

Popular Post ZAG Posted November 20, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 20, 2022 Well I hopped into the redneck around 6am overlooking the food plot. Didn’t see a thing until about 3:40 ish when a spike came out. It was a joy glassing him and watching him feed on what I planted this past August. I’ve seen him in the plot a 100 times this fall. Always fun to see them enjoying it. Anyways I’m glassing him and I see him intently looking off to the east. I see a doe bounding thru the woods nothing behind her. Back to watching the spike, catch deer running from my right towards the plot and it stops b4 the he plot where i can just see its lower body and legs and say to myself be a nice buck. It then bounds out into the plot and stops, it looks to be in a hurry. I see decent horns thru scope, and see enough horns to say lets do it. Quickly line up the scope on the 300 win and send it. For the record I thought about this just prior to shooting (am i far enough away from the scope), well in the quickness of everything i wasn’t quite clear and scoped myself. Hahaha I know im an idiot!! Anyways he ran about 50yrs and piled up. Normally id give him a pass but said f it. This yrs been a struggle finding bucks. Sometimes u take what Mother Nature gives ya! Heres a pic with my dad. Not getting many more of these moments. This post has been promoted to a record BowmanMike, grampy, 2012-Taco and 43 others 44 2
Popular Post BowmanMike Posted November 20, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 20, 2022 After being unlucky in the morning I decided to go find deer in the afternoon. I still hunted my way along some thick pines and two does popped out 80 yds ahead of me,something spooked them. I couldn't get a clear shot at either and was waiting for what spooked them when I turned my head and a coyote was 15 yds from me trying to j-hook around the does staying downwind of them. He almost drove them to me,that was pretty neat. After another hr or so I jumped a doe and fawn below me and they in turn jumped another doe and fawn, all of these were about 50 yds from me. I watched them run off and up the hill in front of me. I froze and just watched and the second doe and young one stopped 200 yds out. She never knew what I was and wanted to figure it out I guess. Too much brush to shoot through and 200 yds is a poke for the muzzleloader. Much to my surprise she started coming back my way. She was either facing me or covered by brush. Then she turned to get downwind from me,still covered. She finally made it to an opening at about 110 yds and stopped. I couldn't wait any longer and shot and she took a few bounds and stopped at 150 yds. Now I was getting nervous but then her tail twitched like crazy and she fell over. Legs in the air is a good sign!! I was super happy and found out the shot was a touch back and I shredded her liver. She was down in less than 10 seconds. Popular Post NYBowhunter Posted November 20, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 20, 2022 Shot this morning at 7:30am, ladder stand is set on a mountainside. Even more special is i took him with my dad's 60 year old 35 remington. Suprised I even went out. After sitting outside all day yesterday in 14 degree temps , it would have been easy to sleep in. Glad I went out, was second guessing my decision, while I was taking that 5 min drive to my property the 19 degree temp., snow and 40mph winds was weighing on me. Good decision because the winds died down for an hour or so just enough for me to connect. Lawdwaz, dmandoes, mowin and 34 others 37
Popular Post Lomax Posted November 20, 2022 Popular Post Posted November 20, 2022 After enjoying some late breakfast with my son after the morning sit I headed back to the woods at 1:50 there were deer in the field already. My son had other obligations and couldn’t hunt the afternoon so was solo for opening day afternoon. It didn’t take long and at 2:05 out came Loki the goofy 5 pt. I watched him through my binoculars while he made his way towards me. He angled to some does feeding in the radish plot on the right side of my field. I switched now from binoculars to my 270 scope watching him close the distance. As he approached the plot he was facing me and I waited for him to turn which seemed like forever but finally turned broadside offering a shot. I obliged and pretty sure I missed with the first shot. To my surprise he stood there while the does scattered. I steadied and put the crosshairs low near the heat and let another round off. He spun and his butt was facing me he then turned back towards me and wobbled forward a few steps and I sent a third round at him and he disappeared into the woods. I waited about 1/2 an hour and got down and checked for blood and found some. I then began tracking him and he was leaving a good blood trail. He was headed towards the road and I caught up to him as he was debating on crossing. I don’t think he physically would’ve made it across the road and through open field so he cut back into the woods. This was crucial because if he crossed the road I couldn’t get him as private property so lucked out after pursuing too quickly in hindsight. I decided to back off and called my son and we planned on looking after hunting a few hours this morning. We found some more of his blood but it petered out and couldn’t pick it back up when he stopped running. So lost blood trail started canvassing general areas we thought he might have went. I initially searched and area behind my house that’s a thick sanctuary area and didn’t see him I then spent the next 2 hours covering my whole property looking getting tired and sweaty now. As I was finishing up ground searching I decided to walk to the top of my pine covered hillside and search along my southern property line working my way into the thick stuff as I came down. As I was doing this I will admit I was feeling defeated and just couldn’t figure out how i walked up to him and he seemed near death and now no sign. Well walked down the hill another 15 yds and looked into the thicket and saw a rump then made out a tail and 2 white antler tines. Called my son who i thought was still looking too but he said he had left but was coming back to help me drag it out. Made quick work gutting it and the we had to drag it 250 yds through heavy thicket to get to 4 wheel trail to get it from there by tractor. My son and I agreed it was the toughest deer drag out since we have owned the property. While he isn’t the biggest buck I’ve ever shot he’s mature and heavy bodied with a unique non typical rack.
