So this is something flying under the radar a little.... Soon there will be mandatory NY State Police performed background checks done for ALL ammunition purchases. It's been in the books as law since the NY SAFE Act in 2014, but back then it was pretty much an unfunded and unplanned out requirement. Well since Governor "Horrible" Hochul (in my opinion more ballsy and worse than Cuomo) basically has been openly AND ACTIVELY sticking it to the US Supreme Court and firearm owners it's resurrected and now very much law. I've talked to a local shop who I hope isn't blowing smoke up my ass. They said NYS selected 60 people whom they're vetting and interviewing to perform the background checks. A system actively being created. All I could find with modern day research is this all has to be in place in September of this year. That said the had told this local shop (American Shooters Supply in Colonie) that is was going into effect 5 days from now. Today when I stopped again the shop said they got an update and that NYS is behind and it's now 81 days out. Sales pitch and marketing having a count down clock when you first walk in the door, but point is the state seems to be working on it. Like anything else in its maiden voyage for this state or govt, I'm sure background checks will be delayed and the system will crash and others issues.
So anyone else buying ammo now or have heard anything about this?

Every gun owner in the state should buy ammo on the day it starts, we could blow the system up.

or it just means it crashes, they go home paid, and everyone reinitiates the background check. lol i get what you're saying and i'd do it. i don't think it'll have the effect some think it does though. any statement they don't care and won't be publicized well enough.

I don’t like it that’s for sure , but this is NYS, any gun owner who hasn’t stocked up to the rafters simply has not been paying attention , as hard as that is to believe . Yes I’ll fight it the best I can with donations to gun groups ,votes and the like , and I’ll continue to pay cash down South every winter . I’m presently stocking up for my kids and son in laws guns

Cuomo actually took it from the books, because even he realized the problems it was going to cause. Turncoat Kathy added it officially to law as part of the CCIA and it actually went into effect on September 2022. Then it was pushed back to January 2023, then to April, and now to September again. The system itself isn't created so I'm not sure who they can be "vetting" to use it. You can't use something that doesn't exist.

The shop you were in, and the others owned by the same guy have told me the cost for the check will most likely be a minimum of $35-$50 (depends which of his shops you go to). A few other shops have said the same fee and one actually told me $75.

I'm sure if you drop a minimum of say- $200 on ammo they might add the check for free. I also feel most shops are OK with this one since it will bring them more revenue seeing the check for a firearm is only $10 but many shops charge at least $50. This will be treated just like a transfer and shops are going to take advantage of it and charge us a huge 'markup'.

While we're at it, the SAFE ACT itself states that no transfer on guns is to be more than $10, that's actually a law very few shops are following, so expect to get bent over with the ammo check charges. I said this above, but it's worth repeating.

For us in the Capital area, other states aren't too far, and even with the gas prices it's most likely going to be cheaper to just go out of state. That's what I did for my last ammo run, and for my last firearm purchase, the latest shotgun. NY can suck a flying monkeys &%#* . If I could get out I would already be gone.

From the Capital District where is the shortest place to pickup Ammo ?

There are a couple of shops around the Bennington, VT area. That's maybe an hour of drive time. If you want to drive about an hour and a half, there are a few shops around Manchester too. Manchester also has Orvis and the Orvis Outlet store (pricey, even a hat at the outlet store is $40). Take the wife, have lunch or dinner, and pick up some gun food.

I haven't looked because MA is another antigun state but I think you could go there and buy ammo as well.

Don't forget southern NH either, which is under a couple of hour's drive from us.

If I absolutely have to, I'll buy ammo here, but if there's a choice, I'm OK spending a little in gas to give a free state like VT my ammo money.

Same as them recording what you buy, this is an information gathering technique.

They want to have proof of what you bought, and when you bought it, so the day they ask for your guns, you can't dispute what you have.

Am I talking all out confiscation? Of course that's their end game.

More likely though, you didn't get the firearm owner's liability insurance, or you didn't renew your long gun permit. I know these things are only talk right now, but give them 5 years.

These people might be evil, but they're not stupid. They know exactly what they're angling towards.

I believe you need a Massachusetts FID card to buy ammo in Mass. At least some places you do because I tried.

I wasn't sure if they'd allow an out-of-stater to purchase.

Talking to a few shop owners when we were in VT last April they said they welcome the business but will have an even harder time keeping shelves stocked with the overflow from NY.

It's also components to make ammo if memory serves me right sifting through the whole set of laws. Powder and primers are going to have to have checks. I can tell you from firsthand exp. that NY Shooter Supply made a record of the powder pellets I bought there last Fall, took a copy of my license, wrote down my phone number and some other information they asked for, and wrote down exactly what I bought.

I can't wait for people to start getting denied for ammo and having to file appeals. It's going to be a huge mess. The worst part is the Supreme Court could have shut all this down and had her arrested for directly violating their ruling. It's like they waved the candy in front of us then pulled it back saying "Just kidding!".

I only buy shotgun shells and 22's I reload everything else. I live no more than 2 hours from Pa. and have a son who lives in NC I can have him bring up ammo or I can get it when I'm down there.

The shop here I use records all info when buying ammo now. They said due to the type of shop they are they feel they’ll be under more scrutiny and aren’t taking chances .

in Fla during the tourist season it can be a bit of a hunt to find normal size magazines, due to so many from restricted states being there .

Down there I prefer to shop in person and pay cash ,not only no record but cheaper . I bought two giggle sticks, guy said $64, I asked if cash helped him out ? $60
