Spysar Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Anyone hunt out of state??? What states are you going to? Or countries? Any draw tags? I'm in the Maine moose draw, the NH moose draw, and the Iowa deer tag draw. Really hoping for the Iowa tag. I might do the Penn elk too. I already have a Mass deer, turkey and bear tag. And of course, I'll get NY tags.
Ncountry Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 I'm waiting for Colorado draw elk results.. this will be our 3rd year. Spysar 1
Spysar Posted May 27, 2023 Author Posted May 27, 2023 And now I'm in the Penn elk draw. Just did it. Anyone that wants in , you have until mid-July.
Skillet Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 PA elk. 14th year. "Who the son sets free, is free indeed" John 8:36
Farflung Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Skillet - If not drawn, does your PA elk drawing entry give you a extra chance the next year? Is it cumulative? For how many years?
Skillet Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Just now, Farflung said: Skillet - If not drawn, does your PA elk drawing entry give you a extra chance the next year? Is it cumulative? For how many years? Yes, you get a preference point every year. I am not sure how many years they will accumulate. I don't expect to ever draw. "Who the son sets free, is free indeed" John 8:36
dmandoes Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 AZ, UT,CO, NV, PA, FL, WY, MT, SD, That's it for this year.
518BowSlayer Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Preference points only for maine and nh moose... plus pa elk. Bought a house last year and can't afford to go on a hunt this year
Wolc123 Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I usually go back for the two extra NY dmp tags when they come out on November 1st.
2BuckBizCT Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 (edited) PA elk and Maine Moose so that means zero chance. I want to do archery elk in Wyoming in 2024 to use all my points. Been talking to lots of outfitters but haven’t finalized anything yet. Edited May 28, 2023 by 2BuckBizCT 518BowSlayer, Nomad and Moho81 3
Nomad Posted May 28, 2023 Posted May 28, 2023 I’ve always found out of state hunting a pain . I can hunt Montana every year with friends who live there ,went once shot a Mullie , had an elk tag but where we went ,hip deep snow 6 degrees in the morning ( we were in a tent ) there was no way I was going to shoot an elk and spend a day trying to get it out . I’m going to Tennessee this year as my nephew has 160 acres of great deer hunting land , and they have a ML season the first two weeks of Nov. my wife is going and we’ll stay at his lake home ten minutes from the land for a mini vacation . Over the counter tags . A few years back my friend in Washington state drew a Sheep tag , one of five issued each year he did kill one too . dmandoes 1

Over the counter tags . A few years back my friend in Washington state drew a Sheep tag , one of five issued each year he did kill one too . I’ve done a couple, a Quebec moose hunt / fishing trip when I was in my 20’s and a CO elk & mule deer hunt when I was in my 30’s. Now that I am pushing 60, I am very glad that I did both when I was younger. At this point in life, there’s no way I would consider another out of state hunt, unless someone else picked up all the expenses. The main reason for that is: that far Northern Canadian walleyes don’t taste any different than those from Chataqua or Oneida lake (but all of those are light years better than those from Lake Erie or the St Lawrence river). Quebec moose is just a smidge tastier than NY whitetail, CO elk is about equal, and CO mule deer is horrible, maybe good for dog food. It’s mostly all about the meat for me. As far as the scenery goes, neither of those places holds a candle compared to NY’s Adirondacks or the Thousand Island region. I get free food and lodging at those spots, can be at either one with a 4 hour drive, and don’t need to purchase out of state tags. I’d have to be nuts to spend a dime on an out of state hunt or fishing trip. The biggest reason I’m glad I did those out of state deals when I was young is: If I hadn’t, I would lack the first hand knowledge of just how good we have it here in NY.
