For us non boating members, what is a blower?

It clears the engine compartment of inboard engines prior to starting.  Gas fumes can collect in the compartment and explode, cause injuries, death and a junk boat.  Lol

That said, the cause of the incident above could be a fuel leak or some other issue.

And now I read the captioned quote and it says fuel leak but who knows at this point.  He could be just covering his butt for NOT using the blower.  Either way it sucks and has got to be scary.

It blows air into bilge to push out gas vapors that may ignight when your starting the engine

Used for inboards and inboard/outdrive boats.  No need when running an outboard.  As was said, fuel vapors can build up under the cowling (hood) of the engine(s), and the blower motor pushes them out for safety before you start the engine(s).  Most boaters step on their boats and turn that on right away while bringing in gear and getting lines ready to cast off.

I wonder if the operator had their mandatory boaters safety certificate ?

I remember that subject “blower operation” had plenty of good coverage in the boatUS on-line course that I took early this spring.  I’ve always been an “outboard only” guy, so it was mostly irrelevant for me.

When I saw the thread title, I thought maybe it was in reference to using a leaf blower on trails, to facilitate a “silent approach” to deer hunting stands & blinds, as “growalot” often mentioned on the old site.

I knew a guy & his father who’s cabin cruiser blew up out on Lake Ontario in the early 90’s.    They were both burned pretty but survived fine.    The boat was chicken chow mein.

Yup, I remember as a kid on lakes with my uncle and his friends (slalom waterskiing) we always ran the blower. Same with the boats of girlfriend's I had over the years. I always wondered why it isn't just automatic? like each time you start the boat from cold the blower runs 5min? or like you can't start the boat without turning blower on first?

Same here. I grew up skiing. Water in summer and snow in winter.
