Social media ruins hidden gem

Recommended Posts

So, there's this fairly hidden swimming hole and cascading waterfall out in Allegany County that until recently was fairly unknown.  I've been there several times on hot summer days and the maximum amount of people I've ever see was eight.  Being in Allegany County it should already be fairly anonymous.    Being unmarked on an unmarked road should have really kept it quiet.  So, I go to take my wife there as she has never been.  I even talk it up how surprised she will be.  When I get there there's easily over a 100 people there.  I t's just not that big so it's kind of a joke.  It looked like the Jersey Shore on a hot summer day.

Cars line the road for 1/2 a mile on either side.  I can only attribute this to some putting this place on social media.

It was bound to happen.  Nothing is secret anymore.

Ugh that sucks.  No doubt, social media is putting everything at everyone's fingertips.  Someone could even innocently share it thinking they found a great private spot and suddenly it gets re-shared and snowballs.

Had a nice swimming hole in Greene County when I/We were growing up ... nice water falls with cliff's to jump from . Today after years of crowds showing up and leaving trash (including used baby diapers) and Graffiti all over the place you see nothing but No Trespassing signs on both sides of the stream !  People say you cannot block people from going into the stream but both sides of the stream is Private Property !

My client owns land on the banks of kinderhook creek.  There's a great swimming hole.  Few yrs ago he let some geo caching group hide some stuff on the property.  That summer he had people just driving down his field to the swimming hole having parties and BBQs.  Took some threats off arrests from the cops to get them to leave.  Gates were installed and now, finally, no more trespassing, or geo caching.

We had a serious issue in NJ a few years back when a Spanish website that lists swimming holes added a bunch for NJ rivers. We were instantly overrun with inner city people that ignored laws like no BBQ, no alcohol, no dumping trash, etc. and all the places got closed for all, even public access points. They remain closed for parking to this day.

This just happened with Blueberry Island on candlewood lake in CT. It got so popular with boaters and teens partying that the health department closed the island because of too much garbage and feces. People were running Uber like boat ferries from mainland to island.
