Crazy if it's the same fish. Wonder how far the weigh in vs. where they caught the fish. They swim all the way back to same spot?

I've seen and been in tournaments where they have a release boat and take the fish out away from the launch area. But it depends on the tourney how it's done.  With that bass they might specifically release it in the same spot.

knowing he had the state record i wonder why he didnt call ahead to have someone waiting for official weight to get the record and still release fish?

Apparently he wasn't that concerned with beating his own record with the same fish.  Maybe if it was a different fish he would've done more to get it officially certified.

Are the markings that distinct? Why can't there be 2 of them? or was it missing a particular fin or something? He should have tagged with GPS. that would be cool to see.

He seems convinced it was the same fish.

“Yes sir it was 100% the same fish. However this time I chose not to certify it as the new record. We did weigh it on the same certified scale as last year but there was not a certified witness available. We just did not want to stress the fish out any further, so we put her back asap. I would be nothing happier than another angler catching the fish of a lifetime.”

I've caught 6lbers in a couple of different lakes.  One time I saw one that had to be 7lb as I was pulling in a 22 inch smallie that prob was close to 6lb there was another with it substantially bigger.  Can't imagine a 9lb.

Also saw a largemouth one time I thought had to be pushing 9 lbs.   He followed in a Zara twice right to the boat.  Tried to follow that up with a senko and he wouldn't take that either.  I fished there for 2 days after trying to get him.  Lol.  My biggest largemouth is 6.2 #s.  And this one looked liked he was eyeing that Zara like he wished it was a Mallard instead.

A 33lb plus bag of 5 smallies is absolutely unheard of! My best bag of just smallmouth many years ago, was 21 and change. From the Mohawk River. A five pounder is rare here. Late September is the time to get the big uns from the river. I can't imagine pulling in anything over 6lb! Much less a 9 pounder! Great job by the angler to C&R that big old girl.
