mowin Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I'm not picky. If it's sharp it works. Picked up a havalon couple yrs ago. I carry it every day. Gets the job done. Bolt Action, nywaw and Pygmy 3
dbHunterNY Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 it's evolved over the years. i've used small folders from Buck and Lanski then switched to a Benchmade 940 folder. Pain to clean though so then I went fixed back to OlTimer sharp finger and some others. I've settled on one that you can't buy anymore, a Blaze Orange Benchmade Altitude with only triangular carbon fiber scales toward the front, S90V steel, and Kydex sheath. Very light, easy to spot so i won't lose it, and holds an edge for a long time. Been looking at MKC knives and would probably have pulled the trigger if I didn't have this one already. mowin and nywaw 2
nywaw Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 The only hunting knife I've ever used since I was a teenager. It was handed down to my father from his father, and then to me. I never had an opportunity to hunt with my grandfather but I take him with me on every hunt! f3cbboy, Otto, Kayak Ken and 10 others 13

I don't have one of those. my dad has used a dull sheetrock knife. lol nywaw 1

I have the same one, I like it a lot. I can gut 3 or 4 deer before it starts to feel like it’s not a razor.
Wolc123 Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 The Sharpfinger is my favorite, and the only one that I use at home in WNY. Larry helped me located the sheath for it, which I lost behind my old deer fridge a couple years ago. I also always carry a Gerber folding saw and use that to cut thru the pelvis bone to make extra sure everything is very well cleaned out back there near the tenderloins during field dressing. I leave the Sharpfinger at home, when I am hunting my in-laws place, up in the Dack’s , because I feel obliged to use the old Buck 110 that my father in law gave me. I don’t like it nearly as well as the Sharpfinger, because it’s much harder to clean and it doesn’t hold an edge as well. There’s a few other knives there on the table that I’ve carried a time or two when I couldn’t find my two primaries (or the sheath for one of them). The last pic is my little EDC Imperial pocket knife. I imagine that a day will come when I use that on a deer, since I rarely leave home without it. I always have an Original Leatherman tool in my pack also, with a well sharpened blade, so someday I may end up using that on a deer. cas, Skillet, nywaw and 2 others 5

grampy Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Last 15 or so years I've just used a couple small Buck folders. One black. One orange. Both hold a reasonable edge. Small enough for maneuverability. Long enough to get the job done. I've got a bunch of different ones I've used over the last 50 years. But it's the little bucks I carry now. nywaw 1
NYRturkeycall Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Wife got me a custom buck 110 that I carry on every hunt. Love it. Rusty, Skillet, nywaw and 1 other 4 Palma non sine pulvere
cas Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I'm at the point where I have a general hiking/small game knife, a turkey hunting knife, deer hunting knife, muzzle loading knife. Have to keep inventing excuses. Sad. lol NYRturkeycall, Rusty, dbHunterNY and 2 others 1 4
Belo Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I have a buck knife. I don't know the exact make and model, but I think it's this or very similar https://www.buckknives.com/custom-knife/customizable-112-ranger-knife/CKS112/ My father gave it to me on my 16th birthday and its gutted every deer and turkey since. I once had my truck broken into and my knife happened to be in my bag that was stolen. I didn't care that much about the binos, calls and rangefinder. I just wanted that knife as it meant so much to me. I put out a post on facebook to the local community. A neighbor was aware of a local kid that had a drug problem and went over there to see the dad and low and behold the kid had my bag. Thought long and hard about pressing charges, but decided the potential blowback wasn't worth it and was happy to have literally all my gear besides the snickers bar inside back haha. nywaw and dbHunterNY 2 "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12
Splitear Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I carry a Buck 110 in my pack. I have been using my Buck Sprint Pro more and more though, it's a great knife. nywaw 1
Bolt Action Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 It took me a few years to find something I liked. For the past few years I've been using the outdoor edge combo set. Comfortable handles, decent edge, easy to see and easy to clean, and didn't break the bank. Lately I've been eying something a little more high end, but don't see the need if the ones I use now get the job done. nywaw and Robhuntandfish 2

In Kentucky we were pretty far from any convenience so I broke down my dad's 10 pointer using gutless method and removed the cape. I did my buck the day before and his buck with that knife without sharpening. wasn't shave your face sharp but still had a decent edge that was probably sharper than some hunters' knives will ever be. lol anything bigger than a deer I'd wrap the handle with paracord for comfort and after to help keep things secure on the way out. one time use that you wouldn't leave on it when used on an animal though.
