Lucky turtle!

Matt’s is an Eastern box turtle. Your dug up nest could be a variety of turtles depending on nearby habitat.

I was thinking something dug that's nest up. Didn't look like they hatched out by the way the shells are strewn about.

Correct. And you can blame raccoons, skunks or coyotes most likely.

Early this morning I came apon a truck stoped in the middle of the road.  As I passed, I see a couple "trying" to get a large snapping turtle to the side of the road with kitchen brooms.  Snapper wasn't having it.  I pulled over and said which direction was she headed.  They pointed to the opposite side of the road they were attempting to lead it too. I grabbed it by side and carried it off road, as the couple looked at me like a turtle whisperer, lol.
