Stuck with a stick and got stuck?

I fotgot about this picture till today. 

When I originally saw it, I thought it was just a discoloration in the fur. Looking closer I saw it was something that appeared to go in and out of the deer.

First thought was some barbed wire, not too much of that around anymore by me.

An arrow shaft? No, doesn't look like it.

 Just some vegetation?

Probably doesn't go in and out of the skin, just the hair. Either way it's odd and I've never seen it before.
