I guess I was asleep and missed this , so this is for others who may not realize the change . Your permit has to be done every three years down from five , and no they won’t notify when Its due . NYS just hates us . I have multiple state  permits they all have the date range right on the permit so you see when it’s due anytime you handle it . Recert online and they send you a new permit with the new dates .

On a side note , Fla charged me $15 to replace my lost one, then sent me a $15 refund check simple form quick turnaround.

Ive determined I'm just going to do it every year so I'm covered.  Either that or just get rid of the one pistol I have.  At this point it's more of a PITA than it's worth.  And yes I get it "it's what they want you to do".  But regardless I still don't want to risk the felony for having a door stop.  Which is basically what it is now since you don't dare to carry it anywhere.

I only have 1 Handgun as well. I believe, I am due this late Fall.

Few years back,I had to get the proper paperwork  sent to me from the State Police.  I sent out the one ,I had filled out and found out after a mailing from Headquarters that,I had 1 more sheet to fill out.

I had them send me the paperwork as ,I have no Printer. No Computer either. I picked up the original paperwork at mayoral State Police Lobby when,I first heard about this.

I have to check through my important  papers  to see if,I made copies at the Library a few years back.

So what is the Penalty for missing the Due Date?

my guess would be you have an uncertified pistol on your premises and its a felony.  In which they can also take all of your other weapons as well since you cant have them being a felon.  Im not a lawyer nor all that versed in this but this is where i would guess NYS would go with it.

I did mine last week. Had breakfast with 3 NYSP Monday. They said all these laws are just to make the liberals happy. Was told they will base issues on intent.  Example given to me: you stop on way home from range to get gas and a couple sodas. You’re carrying concealed.   They get called because finds out you’re carrying concealed. Troopers arrive. Your intent was to buy a couple sodas not shoot the place up. Pistol is owned legally and I have a permit. Now, if someone comes in with gun tucked in waistband and gun has serial number filed off or no serial number at all, their intent is different they feel and he would be charged.
Have two nephews that are Sheriffs. One in Onondaga County, the other in Yates. They told me they will not enforce these laws if someone legally possesses a permit and a pistol.  That is the position from the sheriffs department.
Just be careful. If you are carrying concealed and stop at Wegmans to buy milk Or basically stop anywhere keep it concealed and don’t do anything stupid with the gun and you will have no issues. I don’t carry concealed daily anymore. But if I am carrying I do not hesitate to stop somewhere because I worry about committing a felony.   Keep it concealed. Go about your business and you will be fine.

Yea Cuomo's SAFE Act implemented it every 5 yrs and this new 3 yr requirement was a recent change with Hochul's concealed carry improvement act (screw 2A - round 2). I'm not sure how much it'll be enforced or if you lapse and then update it they will flag you or what will happen. I highly doubt 100% of permit holders will re-certify online though. I do it and put a post-it note or painters tape stuck to the back of my permit that has the recert date on it.

believe it or not prior to the concealed carry "improvement" act i had a grunt at a gun shop look at it with severe reservations and ask me what "re-certification" meant, as if I got it taken away and returned. I told him I would tell him but then he should turn in his side arm he was open carrying in the shop, quit, and never stand behind a gun counter. right after it felt a little harsh but it was the dumbest question i'd been asked in a long time and fact he didn't know about re-certifying every 5 yrs at the time blew my mind. if it wasn't for his co-worker coming over and spelling it all out he'd probably still be there pondering. fact of where he worked and had no idea painted a picture that we're inevitably screwed.

to be charged that means they (LEOs) didn't exercise any discretion. first line is LEOs need to arrest you. then state or county DA office files to charge you. i'd like to think these folks are on our side at some point to keep your freedom but it's hard to say until it actually happens with whomever individuals making those decisions.

i agree but all it takes is the one that isnt those guys.  Or for something to go catywampus and have to defend it in court.  Its not worth it for the bother anymore.  Esp with the laws of where it can and cant be carried and if its posted you can etc.  For what i get out of it its mostly a door stop.

who knows but i'd wait for SOCTUS to weigh in. a lot of it very well might go away. you've already done the work to have the permit. it's only going to be harder to get it back.

I just found 2- Recertification  sheets- so I am set.

Nope electronic only now , it’s fairly fast to do .

My wife and I have a year left , daughters not so much,  one fell in the 5 to 3 trap, she had till sept 2024 then dropped back to sept 2022 …. They allow those folks till the end of this month . Her permit lists her current address and one gun ,on the NYSP page no gun and years old address gotta love NYS ! Called the hot line they said I could edit it on the online form , no explanation why their info is years out of date .

Daughter number 2 has till Sept 2 which is three years since last one .

I have everyone’s info, I think I’ll put a sheet with dates on the front of my safe .

The problem with your theory is what happens if/when you need it? Stopping a crime with a gun you’re carrying illegally won’t look good in court.

If one didn’t have a permit, I could see not bothering today, just go full on illegal, ghost gun with 15 round mag. Around here it’s an appearance ticket that you don’t have to show up for , in fact many get caught a couple more times and just collect the tickets like some do stamps I guess .
