NYRturkeycall Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 What are your thoughts on permethrin pump spray vs aerosol cans? Palma non sine pulvere

Just be sure to get the garment good and damp. Then let it dry. I too mix my own from concentrate, bought at Tractor Supply. Saves quite a bit over buying Sawyers. Plus, if you want, you can make enough to actually dip your garments. Edited August 12, 2023 by grampy mowin and GreeneHunter 2
Versatile Hunter Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 I use Sawyer’s spray. Effective. ATbuckhunter and cynthiafu 2

Permethrin is scent free. But if you use the aerosol cans you can smell the aerosol for a long time. Has a chemical smell to it that resembles fresh plastic. If you are going to mix your own , make sure you only buy the one that is 10 percent or less. And absolutely make sure its the water based version and NOT the petroleum based mix . All the concentrated mixes above 10 percent are all petroleum based. And some of the 10 percent are also. You do not want any of those NYRturkeycall 1

I use the same from Tractor Supply , I generally spray all around our house and backyard and prior to Hunting Season I use the same mix for the hunting clothes ! grampy 1
DirtTime Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 I use the pump spray bottle. It goes where you want it to more than an aerosol can. You guys buying the concentrate at Tractor Supply, would you be so kind as to provide the brand or is it Sawyers? NYRturkeycall 1
cas Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 (edited) For what you save mixing your own, you can buy a set (or couple sets of) dedicated "stinky" turkey hunting clothes. I literally drown my turkey hunting clothes in it every year. Two pair of pants, a jacket, several shirts, head nets, gloves, hats, all my socks, one pair of boots. Never had a tick get me. I do buy one bottle of Sawyers to do my pack and one pair of boots I wear deer hunting. I believe Tractor Supply sells more than one brand, at least online. Martin's and Gordon's. I I usually use Gordons. I believe the Martin's is (may be) water based, should smell less. Edited August 13, 2023 by cas

NYRturkeycall Posted August 21, 2023 Author Posted August 21, 2023 Ordered another two bottles of the spray because Amazon had an insane deal. I came up for me. Two bottles for 16 bucks. Here's not to kiwi spray coat my boots because the waterproofing has since worn off in mucho heavy rains. Thoughts on waterproofing them over the permethrin. Figuring it would just cover the molecules and render it useless for ticks on my boots. I wear calf high snake boots most fall, helps with ticks big time on the lowers Palma non sine pulvere
ATbuckhunter Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 I buy sawyers for pretty cheap like NYR said, so I don't bother mixing. I did enough mixing in all the chem courses I took in college, id rather stay away from that when I can. Personally I prefer the spray bottle, but the actual spray nozzle sucks monkey nuts. You are also correct about waterproofing covering the chemical. Don't worry about having the stuff on your boots. I spray fairly heavy and realized that they still get to about mid thigh/lower waist before they absorb enough of it to kill them. NYRturkeycall 1
Doebuck1234 Posted August 22, 2023 Posted August 22, 2023 Grabbed a bottle of Sawyers lastly month while at the REI store in henrietta. Awaiting spray and hang time!
Caeden4 Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 I know this is old, but i didnt want to start a new thread on this subject. just this morning i finally got around to spraying down all my clothes with sawyers in anticipation for fall turkey opener. just my luck, while they were drying outside, it started raining/hailing. only went on for a few minutes before i noticed and put the awning up over everything, but they didnt get the full 2 hours sawyers recommends they dry before this weird weather event hit. it was at least an hour, but less than 2. i normally wash everything on a real light cycle (then air dry) after spraying / before wearing, and it always works just fine, but that's when it had at least the 2 hour recommended initial dry time. i really do not feel like re-doing everything again, but i also dont want to find out in the field that the hour they got wasnt enough for it to bind... this is my long way of asking, anyone here ever skimp on the dry time, and if so, did you notice any difference?
