10 ga. (Goose gun?)

Recommended Posts

I'm helping a family member sell some of her late husband's hunting gear, one of his shotguns is a single shot New England Firearms 10 gauge with a 3 1/2" chamber. I believe he used it for turkey hunting. I have first choice on most of the gear but I have never used a 10ga. ( I'm not a big turkey hunter) and question is it used for anything other than turkey or geese?

Those NEF 10g kick like a mule. Buddy had one and it definitely killed turkeys.

With the TSS loads out there, a 2og will just about match a 10g pattern out to 40y and beyond, and your shoulder won't need to be reset.

I had both a Marlin super goose gun and a Ithaca mag 10. The mag 10 was great 2 1/4 Oz's of shot it was great for hunting ducks and geese in fields 60yds was optum.

I had Ithaca mag 10 also, think it had a 32" barrel. If you missed, you could just about wack em with the barrel, lol.

Is it camo with a 24in barrel?

With today's modern ammo there is no advantage to the 10g over a 12 ga chambered in 3.5in if you as me .

Yes, it is camo with a 24" barrel. He had a thing for the NE firearms single shots. He had a 12ga. Ultra Slug that he used for deer and bear.

That was NEF Turkey model ,I have one too that my nephew uses for Turkey. Much better goose guns in 10g if you feel the need .

I've shot slugs out of it accurate at 50 yards but you might need shoulder surgery when your done .

My Remington SP-10 isn’t bad to shoot at all with even the heaviest loads what’s bad is how damn heavy the thing is. I have a good buddy who’s father still turkey hunts with the same gun and he’s a run and gun guy, I couldn’t imagine carrying it through the woods.

I also couldn’t imagine shooting a single shot 10ga that probably weighs half what mine does!

I'm quite happy with my Mossberg 12ga. My shoulder would not appreciate the recoil from a 10 ga. slug or any other 3 1/2" load.

It will kick less as gun weighs more.. mossberg 835 has  more kick as 3.5  in is a 10 ga load  out of a 12 ga
