Too late to plant?

Recommended Posts

Due to other commitments I was unable to get my brassica plot planted.  I can get it done this weekend but am wondering if it is futile?  I will be mixing in clover…chicory and some other fillers.  Last thing i want is to disc it and end up sitting over a dirt field this season. Thoughts?

i think it would be well worth it.  A month of growing time can produce pretty well.  Chicory takes a bit to get going it always seemed to me.  But if you threw in some oats and winter rye might be a good idea too. Its supposed to be real warm this weekend youll prob get germination in 3 days and off and running.  I would def throw out a mix and your bound to get some results from some of them.  Depending on your location you can prob get 45 days of growth,

We just started planting winter rye at our farm.  I would put that down and then frost seed with the chicory, clover and other seeds in the late spring.   I'm not sure of the growing time for brassicas - I know all the "buck bags" say to plant early August for our area.

Thanks for the encouragement…I’m gonna blast it this weekend

Not sure where your from but this might be a bigger issue. Amazing zero rain in forecast for a week.  But prob enough moisture in the soil already to get you to a rain.

Might be better off with a throw and mow than tilling.  The thatch on top of the seed would hold moisture as opposed to tilling up the soil and drying it out.

Just north of Delta Lake in Western. Its gonna be a rough disc with plenty of thatch from last weeks mowing. I should have. O germination issues.  Im more concerned about getting enough growth to be worthwhile as opposed to leaving it as it is. The deer loved the brassica greens as they were growing last year so as long as I get 4-5 inches of growth I will be happy. Its just fun watching then in the plots. My cell cams had 9 in the clover plot this evening.

You'll have no problem getting 4-5 inches of growth. Got a minimum of two months growing time left.

When I worked for NYSDOT helped out clearing snow up that way a few times. Esp the one winter I had the route from Rome to the Ava barn up Stokes on 26.

Used to fish there a bit too above Pixley and fished Delta a lot.

You'll def get enough growth for them to be munching it.  Good luck. Def part of the fun is just getting the plots to grow and checking out the deer.
