STERLING FOREST STATE PARK HUNTING.

Recommended Posts

Southren NY Hunters- don't  forget to get your 2023/24 Sterling Forest State Park  Hunting Permit. Still no September  Hunting in this area- but October  is fast approaching!

Over 22,000 Acres now.Plenty of Big ol Black Bears. Come thin them out. Too many Coyotes  as well. Great area for Coyote Hunters and,I might just give some info out. Plenty of Deer- but no Wild Turkeys. Forget about that picture on the Hunting Guide cover-lol. Some Pheasants  get released- but the bulk goes to Crowded Stewart State Forest.

It can get crowded down here as well. Half of New Jersey Hunters use the area it seems.  At least you can Park where you want. Sterling forest is my favorite Hiking area as well. It is the only time,I carry because of the number of Black Bears Ambling around the Forest.

-i was told no carry while hiking

No Firearms allowed on the Appalachian Trail or the 1/4mile zone on each side of it.

I have both the Hunting Map + the Official Hiking Map with extensive  Regulations on each.

No Regulation as you describe TG.

I have been checked years back while Carrying in Sterling Forest. No problem at all.

Stewart State Forest however does not allow Handguns to be carried.  No Rifles are allowed either for Deer Hunting.

That’s an easy get around, red squirrel and porcupine is open year round…

yea, its not something im in for anyway but get your point -never thought about carrying there because state parks were always a no go i thought -biggest pain is when you are fishing like a river and wade for miles and go over all kinds of boundaries

plus sterling has special timetable you can hunt  there

Is that a new rule for Stewart? I vaguely recall there being a rifle season.

what legal justification do they have to not allow concealed carry? It's not a bank, school etc. For an outdoors wilderness area with remote trails (thinking of lone female hikers), bears etc. It would be where you'd want to carry the most. Does anyone know? NYC influence?

Stewart has always been shotgun only and still is -but surrounding area is rifle, years past when there was a check station there and there were few dec officers assigned to the area and also some state troopers  most people knew better now even the ones in charge dont care and people often use rifles pretending not to kmow while the one in charge are hoping to catch them for a ticket, tickets are the only goal now it seems and years past was totally oposite and was a great lans as a resul

Stewart State Forest sits right next to Stewart International Airport.  Plenty of Aircraft including  Military ones taking off and coming in right over the State Land.

Pretty sure that is the reason for no Rifles allowed.
