Nontypical Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) I’m thinking of carrying a pistol this year as well as my rifle. Just in case something comes within range. Undecided whether to go with my P229 in 357 Sig or my P220 in 45. Kind of leaning towards the 45 for the bigger hole, but the 357 is a speed demon at almost 1500fps. Who is planning on bringing a sidearm in with them this year and what’s your weapon of choice? Edited November 6, 2022 by Nontypical Rusty 1

Otherwise, maybe my .380 Glock model 42. But most of the time, I don't carry in the woods. Sent from my SM-G990U using Tapatalk
Splitear Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 The only deer I’ve take with a handgun have been 44mag, though I’ve missed more than I’ve hit :) cervidchasers and Spaceman Spiff 1 1
cervidchasers Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 I have a hard time with rifle off hand, i doubt will get any with a hand gun.
TACC Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 What ammo are you using for both the 357 Sig and the 45?I personally would be shooting 10mm, with 220 grain hardcast Underwood ammo.Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Nontypical Posted November 7, 2022 Author Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) For 45 I have Federal HST +P 230g and Barnes Vor-TX 185g. In 357 Sig I have Speer Gold Dots in 125g and I also have Underwood Bonded JHP also in 125g. I was thinking the Barnes in 45 as it’s a solid copper bullet. What do you think @TACC? Nontypical Posted November 7, 2022 Author Posted November 7, 2022 I don’t have a 10mm, yet… But I do have some Winchester Rangers in 40S&W 180g. And the 40 is just a shorter case than the 10mm. I heard the are identical to the Black Talons. Not 100% sure though. Just figured that between the 45 and 357, they would be my best options.
onlybrowning Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 I’ve always wanted to take deer with a handgun. This is yet another time I wish I hunted southern zone (other than my recent jaunt to 4J). I’ve had them in the woods on occasion, but can’t bring myself to dedicate time to it. If I filled a buck tag and had doe tags left, I’d be more apt to stick to it. In the past I’ve carried Encores, Contenders, revolvers in all sorts of configurations. They all would have done well. Anyone here a member of the Specialty Pistols Forum? Lots of dedicated handgun hunters there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Nontypical 1

GencountyZeek Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 I will be carrying my Springfield XDm elite in 10mm. Has been very accurate with 180gr loads. Nontypical and TACC 2
Nomad Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 Sometimes I tote my SW 586 in 357, with Black Talons , yes I still have them from the ‘90s . As far as Rangers , if they say SXT on the box, it’s what Winchester came out with after the BS bad press on the Talons , some say it stands for Same eXact Thing . A hard cast bullet from say Buffalo Bore would be hard to beat though . Ive killed deer with that gun and a Dan Wesson .44 mag . But I’m pretty much a rifle guy now, but a .380 , or .22 Derringer May or may not be in a pocket or boot . Nontypical 1
dbHunterNY Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 not toting a sidearm. no need. i am thinking about taking a deer with a 9mm just because I can. I have a separate Sig slide with red dot coming within a week or so. I'll be using the fancy new 185gr Seismic ammo and it'll be really close. 20 yards and in. Should be good. I've seen it done before. Nontypical and Nomad 2

And is it just an optic ready slide or something different like a Pro Cut or something else?

Actually after doing some research the T series is an improved version of the SXT and Black Talons with more weight retention and greater expansion. I’m still thinking the Barnes Vor-TX may be my best bet. The solid copper monolithic bullets always performed well in my other weapons. Edited November 7, 2022 by Nontypical Nomad 1

It's the base RX slide cut for and with a ROMEO1 Pro red dot mounted on it. i use the gun for action pistol but figured i'd give it a go for close range deer. Thought about the Procut slide but couldn't justify spending that much with picking up the red dot separate. Edited November 7, 2022 by dbHunterNY Nontypical 1
