Moho81 Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I just got back from the Genesee County Legislature meeting where they approved 12-13 year olds to deer hunt permanently in Genesee County. It was really great to see all the legislators on board with this and they where truly appreciative of the small group that showed up in support. I’d imagine that every county will have to go through this process unless the state steps up and makes it a state law. G-man, LET EM GROW, Rusty and 9 others 12
mowin Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 Wow, that's fantastic. I hope other counties adopt the same law.
Bucksnbows Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 I like youth mentoring programs because not all kids are ready by age X and others are ready well before that legal age. NJ legal age is 10 which is a good compromise. I’ve personally mentored kids as young as 8 (PA) and had 12 year olds barely ready as well. The youths must be accompanied by a licensed hunter who has at least three years experience if I remember correctly. It’s not just giving a 12 year old the ability to go out hunting on their own. I’ve heard it over and over that taking a kid in the field and being a mentor is so fun and rewarding and honestly now after doing it if I could have a youth with me for the rest of my life and never have to carry a gun I’d be in heaven. Coaching my daughter through the hunt and the shot has to be in my top 5 hunting experiences. I’m sure the day she takes a deer will be number 1 on that list. dbHunterNY Posted October 12, 2023 Posted October 12, 2023 hope the state does. Erie county executive mark poloncarz veto'd their legislature passing a law to let youth hunt deer. there's always that one guy and he's it.

People really showed up to support it and after many meetings they finally got the legislature on board with them then that Dbag veto'd it becuase he doesn't like hunting.

Rockland county is opted out too. Damn city folk.
Moho81 Posted October 16, 2023 Author Posted October 16, 2023 I guess I misunderstood at the meeting. Genesee County passed the regulation but it was only for another 2 years. So in 2025 this will come up again. Kinda sounds like this is all they can do until the state steps in. I’ve also heard Orleans, Livingston and Wyoming Counties also extended it.
