Enzo and I had our first real hunt together at Otis Pike!

No bird contacts but I was happy how he did- stayed in range but not too close- we slowly zigzagged the fields and did some figure 8s through thick cover where his nose showed an interest along the trail- almost 5 miles!- he clung close in heavy cover- will need to work on that

I felt better when I talk to some. Experienced hunters when we were checking out and they had no contacts either. They say it’s the luck of the draw with which parking spot/ hunting area you get… They got seven pheasants last week and none this week!

Tomorrow I am calling in to try to get res for next Sunday!

Every dog hunts different as far as ranging, and it can change as they get more comfortable. I’d rather have a close hunter than a ranging dog.  My only experience is with beagles though.

I’d say he did a great job, and glad you guys were able to get out in the field together.

Dog will likely stretch out some once he/she has more bird contact. Always easier to stretch them out than to reel them in!  This from a guy lucky enough to own not one but two special Brittanies, both from the same bloodlines. My first was a big running dog that thought he was a Pointer. He I could pull in when in grouse and woodcock covers which was 90% of the time, but my handler had to work with me a bunch to show me how. My second Britt hunted closer naturally.  Both phenomenal grouse and woodcock dogs, but they got worked 3-5 days a week in season in multiple states. If you put the time in, your dog(s) will respond. Best of everything with your hunting this season and beyond.
