Splitear Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I took a few pistols home to shoot with my dad over the holiday, and I just spent the evening cleaning them. I don’t know that there’s a more satisfying feeling than taking apart a dirty gun, cleaning it thoroughly and putting it back together. One of my favorite parts of muzzleloading is the time spent cleaning at the end of the day. Surely I’m not the only weirdo who enjoys cleaning. nywaw, cervidchasers, grampy and 2 others 5
Buckmaster7600 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Nope, not me! Other than a bore snake and a quick wipe down “neither get done enough” I very very rarely clean guns. I bet my edc has well over 1500rds since its last cleaning. I’ve found that dirty from shooting “not rusted” guns tend to shoot just as reliably as clean ones. My truck/boat/atv etc. are treated the same way, never clean but well maintained. Wolc123 and NYRturkeycall 2
GreeneHunter Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I clean my Gun once every 5 years , at most over 5 years 20 rounds might go through it !
phade Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 (edited) I do not clean that much. I find it a labor intensive process that I have to plan time for, including set up and take down of material, stand, etc. I’ll run a bore snake and oil/wipe down as needed. Then one good clean post season. If bad weather hits I’ll do a quick wipe down. But in terms of it being fun or enjoyable? Nope. Edited November 27, 2023 by phade Bolt Action and escpen 2
The Back 40 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I wouldn't say that I enjoy cleaning them but I do enjoy the smell of the cleaner, just like the smell of a freshly discharged shell. Doebuck1234 1
dbHunterNY Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I enjoy the task but not the responsibility and need to fit it into my schedule. For example I have team practice tonight for traveling pistol team i'm in. Don't think I'll make it. My precision bullseye pistol is a modified Ruger Mark III 22LR that I need to strip down regularly based on volume of ammo. I've got every part in my head, where it is and what it does.... still if you've ever taken one of those Rugers completely apart you know what doesn't need to be said. My steel challenge/IDPA pistol still needs to be stripped from competition that ended a couple months ago. With mentoring and my own hunting i've got a few different rifles that need to be cleaned any given week based on weather. lol I shoot less when it's cold and when it's cold I've got a handful of guns to clean regularly. If someone wants to do some small game or bird hunting then add a couple shotguns into the mix.
Doebuck1234 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Grandfather was big on cleaning after shooting.would spend what seemed like forever pushing out a shotgun barrel till the patches were clean.i myself will do a deep clean like that if it's necessary, usually spray a couple times/run bore snake through couple times.Always wipe action+gun down/run snake through quick after every hunt just do get whatever crud off from it
Wolc123 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Cleaning my ML definitely got a lot more fun and fast, since I started using foaming bore cleaner and a bore snake.
Spaceman Spiff Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 (edited) Ugh not me! I shoot revolvers most often….so many holes. The 10 shot 617 is the worst. Some days ill drag out half dozen to play with, it takes over an hour to clean them up afterwards. Edited November 27, 2023 by Spaceman Spiff Thread need a picture
Moho81 Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 My least favorite thing to do but I do have a friend exactly like you. He absolutely loves to clean guns so much so that I purposely show him my dirty guns because the next thing you know he has it torn down cleaned and put back together. Lol. biggamefish Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 I love the smell of it. If they are kept up it isn't bad but it can be a chore if they are super dirty.

sbuff Posted November 28, 2023 Posted November 28, 2023 (edited) I do enjoy it , don't consider it work at all . I clean after one round to 500 rounds ,it gets cleaned . If you guys are shooting pyrodex out of a muzzleloader you'll end up with a tomatje stake if not cleaned Edited November 28, 2023 by sbuff Splitear 1
