Bolt Action Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I need a little help from anyone with electrical experience. Partial outage today. Nothing unusual or excessive was plugged in. Power went out in the basement and the wall that holds the TV, router etc. The panel box looks good, but I reset the impacted breakers anyway, and also reset all the GFI's. None of that helped though. Oddly, the cable box periodically lights up for a second then goes dark again. I have a call in to an electrician. Anything else I should check in the mean time?
Wormser Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Had this happen a few years ago and it was a brown out issue NYSEG was having. Half my house was working and some things would work for a bit then go off. Lights were half power or you could watch them go from bright and slowly fade to nothing. I thought for sure it was something internal. I know enough about electric to be dangerous but when it was happening I couldn't figure anything out.
Bolt Action Posted December 9, 2022 Author Posted December 9, 2022 I know green light is installing fiber optic in the area, but would think they knock out the whole house, if anything..
cj3a Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 You are probably missing one leg. Meaning you only have 120 volts so half your panel has power. If you have a well the pump will not be happy. DoubleDose, Ncountry, The Back 40 and 1 other 4

Bolt Action Posted December 9, 2022 Author Posted December 9, 2022 No worries there. We're in Greece, so on the sewer. No well. In the box, only one, maybe two, of the breakers would impact this. 4 and 10. nywaw 1
NYRturkeycall Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Simple but good advice, don't forget when you reset your breakers...Do so with your body and face on the other side of the metal door and only your arm and hand to turn the breakers back on. That's what the door panel was designed for. Bad wiring or a short or anything could be a big boom right in your face. dbHunterNY and TimberGhost 1 1 Palma non sine pulvere

Bolt Action Posted December 10, 2022 Author Posted December 10, 2022 Power comes in underground.. figured it out. There was an outlet with a loose wire that melted the side of the outlet and shorted the circuit. Oddly the breaker in the box didn't trip. Ncountry, grampy and NYRturkeycall 3
Spysar Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 It's not odd that the breaker didn't trip. Unless it was an arc fault breaker, there's no reason for a loose wire to cause an overcurrent that would trip the breaker. Was it a "stab in" or was the wire wrapped around the screw? Glad you found it , that could of caused a fire. Bolt Action 1
Bolt Action Posted December 10, 2022 Author Posted December 10, 2022 Originally that had the holes in the back for stabbing but the wires were wrapped around the screws. It has me wanting to look at all my outlets now to make sure there are no other issues.
nywaw Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 I don't even worry about breakers tripping! Bolt Action, Splitear, NYRturkeycall and 5 others 1 1 6
Arcade Hunter Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Id be willing to bet theres a loose wire nut somewhere
