NYS DEC BAITING DEER?

Live from the woods!!

I was roaming about 3M today and found this nice little setup.

 

If this is truly DEC property are they seriously allowed to bait deer with corn? Wouldn't this just facilitate the spreading of EHD?  Does this look like a "research" setup to you? What would you guys do in this situation?

Interesting first post and handle.welcome aboard I guess??As to the post regarding the "dec" bait station I would contact your local headquarters and ask about it.assuming it could be some kind of research thing.truly have not seen or heard of this so really have nothing helpful.maybe someone else can chime in that does!

The local township here baits, but only from January until the end of March. Honestly, I can’t see DEC doing it. Especially during the season. I’d almost bet someone is doing illegal activities and just put NYSDEC on the cam to make it seem like they were on the up and up.

I felt compelled to stay anonymous until this was sorted.

Call your local DEC officer to confirm. If it’s theirs, he’ll tell you. I’m sure he will be appreciative that you reached out either way.

Prob a measure to scare someone off and not report it IMO, unless NYSDEC does baited cull hunts.

Just got off the phone with a dec dispatcher, they couldn't put be through to a field officer so I elected to call back on Monday when I can actually speak to someone.

Probably quite illegal to write NYSDEC on my trail cams isn’t it? If not would surely help against theft

You can find the DEC officers listed by region in the hunting book you get with your license. Or on the DEC website. I’d call them directly not the dispatch
