mowin Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 My second favorite season. I really enjoy this and the holiday hunt. It's when I hunt with a lot of friends and family. Both landowners want does taken, so those that I bring in to hunt that have gotten a buck are only shooting does. Those that haven't gotten a buck, can take one if they choose. All bucks are off limits during the holiday hunt, we make double sure it's not a dropped buck before shooting. Good luck to those out during the late season. Robhuntandfish Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) I haven't seen a deer in our woods in muzzleloader season yet, except two does by the truck once when I got back... And years we've had snow walk out there and can't find a track. With the freezer full and chances slim for a big buck I prob won't make it out much. Maybe during the holiday week if it's decent out just to be out there and try an afternoon on what's left of our plots. Next weekend might try for a duck. sbuff Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I wish they had it up north where we hunt , I may venture to state land in 4b but now it's weather dependent. Good luck guys mowin and Splitear 2
fletchny11 Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I've been using my ML since gun opened. I always like late ML with snow on the ground. I usually end up running into a fat doe sooner or later. Splitear and mowin 1 1
JJBat150 Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I carry a muzzleloader all season, so it's really nothing more than a week of extra hunting time. The holiday season will be intresting- been talking to a few neighbors and landowners that have property not normally hunted, but seemly over populated with deer, and they want something done. For whatever reason, most seem to be more agreeable to muzzleloaders than shotguns (and only during holiday season) and its opened the door for some new hunting opportunities... Same here,I love my muzzleloader. I usually look forward to MZ season but my freezer has no space left,so I don't know if I will make it out. If the weather is not too harsh I may take the bow out couple of times before the season closes,it is always a long 10 months until Ocyober. fletchny11 and Splitear 2

Ive always preached that when asking someone to hunt their property. Ask for bow and muzzleloader. Most people think of a muzzleloader as a musket. Lol. But people always seem more open to it. grampy, Splitear and fletchny11 3 "it's pointless for humans to paint scenes of nature when they can go outside and stand in it"- Ron Swanson

I believe it is because of an image held by many non hunters or neutrals of hunters with repeating centerfire weapons spraying lead all over the landscape...Even a person who knows relatively little about firearms knows this is not going to happen with a bow or a MZ.... grampy, Splitear, Lomax and 1 other 4
grampy Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 If the weather is nice during the holiday hunt, I may take my old TC Thunderhawk Shadow for a walk? mowin and Splitear 2
Lomax Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Have the Knight 50 cal disc rifle ready to go. The Wifey bought it for me around 25 years ago and it’s still a tack driver at 100 yds. It’s seen a lot of rounds and many miles walked on these legs of mine. It’s been a dependable black powder rifle as i kept it very clean over the years. That’s the thing though you have to clean it thoroughly every time you shoot it as it’s not as accurate if you don’t. It’s a bit of a pain to clean it compared to newer break action muzzle loaders. I complained last year about it when I came home from Ohio’s Jan black powder season So wifey came through again and is buying me a new one for Christmas I need to learn to complain more ha. Honey now I can’t see out of it they forgot to add the scope. 😳 CVA Accura Mr-x 50 cal I’m Open to scope pairing suggestions. Let me know what ya think? Pygmy, Splitear and fletchny11 3

That’s the key to most any ML, keeping them clean. I just got done cleaning mine after todays unload shot. I actually enjoy the cleaning process, make a cup of tea and listen to an audiobook for 20 minutes while I’m swabbing. Lomax 1
Splitear Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 I’ll have my TC New Englander out as much as I can. It’s a great hunting gun, and I’m really enjoying the .54 cal barrel I just got for it. Very accurate, as much as I am, and to me, just a great looking sidelock. Swamp_bucks, Lomax and fletchny11 3

I want to add a side lock like yours to my deer rifles. I like the looks of that one i have seen a few on here and I don’t have any 54 cal either so maybe something I complain to the misses about before my next birthday. Splitear 1

They are great guns, not a period gun or anything like that, but serve as a great hunting gun. They are shorter barreled than most Hawkens and such, have the flat buttstock like a shotgun, and were available with 50 cal, 54 cal, and 12 gauge barrels. I’m happy that I’ve finally been able to snag all three barrels for mine. My 12 gauge barrel is a Green Mountain barrel and takes Rem chokes, which is super handy. I’m going to try to take a turkey with it this spring. Edited December 11, 2022 by Splitear Pygmy and Lomax 2
