I went deep sea fishing for the last day of 2023, with a group of friends. It was a little cold and breezy to start the day. Little choppy but not to bad for me, some would disagree. Like my friend that puked, LOL.

The day started as a massacre. We landed on the pollack and it was an epic bite. Even the worst boat rod fishermen and women were catching. Our group filled 3 of those huge white coolers, and 4 or 5 fish totes in 1 1/2 hours!

Then the captain announced we couldn't hold anymore.

We were all thinking, cool, now we'll be able to move and get some redfish or haddock. Since we only fished for 1 1/2 hours, and we paid for a "full day" trip, we felt we had a few more hours left. But NO, the captain said too much fish, and we're heading to the barn! Although we slayed the pollack, our group was a little pissed about the early quit. We drove for hours to get there and we all just wanted to fish. We were supposed to be back at the dock at 3pm and we got back at 12 pm!

Anyway, my buddy caught the biggest one, and won the pool. We all walked off with about 75 lbs of fillets with the skin on. Pollack are OK to eat, but my least favorite, so I'm probably giving most of it away.

I did score a 3.6 lb lobster and some clams at the fishermans co op. Even though we didn't like quitting early it was still a great day with an epic bite.

Sounds like a great day but I’m guessing you were on a head boat ??? I usually go out of Green Harbor with a 6 pack and even after filling totes Capt will ask what’s next & we’ll fish our way back inshore . I’m sure you know   Pollack fries very well for fish and chips 😋Happy New Year

Yes, head boat. I do lots of 6 pack fishing too. I follow the hot bites. I do Maine, NH, Mass, RI . I fish for everything. But there is a time and place for fishing. This time of year there aren't as many choices. Head boats aren't my first pick, but when you want to fish , you gotta do what you gotta do.

Absolutely, nothing wrong with it , besides hard to get a crew this this of year . I do mostly head boats down where I live in NJ . I’d like to do a Port Judith for a double digit fluke hopefully this year I make it up there .

I can recommend some boats for DD fluke. The big fluke are out at Nantucket shoals. We get several DD's every year out there.

Timber G,

You want to make sure your going to Nantucket Shoals. Not Block Island. RI boats are closer to Block Island than Nantucket. Best place to leave from for NS is Hyannis, or Yarmouth, or near there....

My favorite 6 pack boat is called the "Emma Jack" captain Mike Hearney. Great guy. A friend now. He will put you on the fish. We caught many DD's with him. You want to go to Nantucket Shoals. Mikes boat is in a prime location to get there. I have tons of weekend trip scheduled with Mike. He's pretty booked on weekends. If your retired and can do weekdays , you can probably get a spot. You need to have a group, I don't think he does open boats. Tell him I sent you.

Other good six packs are, Bad Influence, capt Jeff V, and On Time capt Jimmy the Greek

Best party boat hands down is the "Helen H" captain Joe Huck. He pioneered Nantucket Shoals fluking. 100' boat with bunks. He does some 2 day trips where you stay overnight on Nantucket and sleep on the boat, and you can disembark and get dinner and walk around Nantucket. Helen H has online booking. They will "go live probably in jan or feb. If you want to get the trip you want, I'd be sitting at your computer at 10am when it starts. They will sell out the best days first. Plus, they board the boat in order of reservation. If you reserve first, you will board first . That will get you first choice of fishing spot and table and bunk.

Thank You S/S , Ive heard of the Greek and he's always booked . I'll give Capt Mike a try for sure.  What kind of boat is he running ??  C/C or Pilot House ..

Nice, kinda weird with the captain calling it off early and not trying to try for another species.

Yeah, we weren't happy about it. My ticket said "full day trip"

Capt should have pulled the plug on the pollack and finished out the day with something else..... But then half the people would have not liked that either... capt was in a tough spot

Wait...what's a six pack boat? And I need to go to Nantucket Shoals. I would LOVE a DD Fluke trip

A 6 pack is a boat you hire with you and 5 of your friends. The whole boat is yours , and you control the trip somewhat.

A 6 pack boat that heads to Nantucket shoals is your best bet at a DD fluke. I've gotten several, but I know people that fished years and still don't have one. Nantucket shoals is best place to do it, but far from guaranteed.
