Keith Nehrke Posted November 7, 2022 Posted November 7, 2022 It wouldn't be a NYS hunting forum without Luna and Kunox's Tracking Journal (and their trusty sidekick Tom of course). crappyice, Rusty and Outdoorstom 2 1
Popular Post Outdoorstom Posted November 7, 2022 Author Popular Post Posted November 7, 2022 11/7/22 #1 Last night Luna and I tracked a buck that reportedly had been hit at least twice with a 6.5 creedmoor. The young hunter and his Dad had waited a while, then started tracking him and bumped him from a bed in a tree line at 250 yards and backed out. We arrived and Luna quickly took us to the bed and continued on, showing us light sporadic blood as we went. We were in a clearcut when the buck allowed us to get within 10 yards before moving off. I left Luna with the hunter and his Dad and moved up to see if I could get a shot, but the buck disappeared. I decided to keep going since he had let us get so close, I figured I would be able to get a shot off. We caught up to him two more times, but he was in thick stuff. The second time I watched him slowly walk off, looking back as he went. We backed out at this point after 726 yards and went back at first light this morning. I put Luna down where we watched him walk off last night and she locked right back on. About 2 minutes later the hunter spotted him on his feet and moving away. Luna and I stayed back while the hunter moved up to get a shot with his rifle. That didn’t happen, the buck gave us the slip. Luna started pulling hard, saying c’mon, he went this way. We ended up going 600 yards before the hunter was able to finish him. The initial shot was brisket. #2 At the same time we finished the first track, the phone rang and it was a friend asking for assistance. Perfect timing….5 minutes away. The hunter was walking out to his stand after taking his kids to school when he spotted two bucks. After the shot he watched the buck go by a nearby pond and lay down. He thought he was finished and was surprised when it got up. He took another shot as it ran off and thought he hit it. We started by the pond and Luna quickly took us the hundred yards or so through a cut cornfield and into the woods. We were 10 yards in when the hunter spotted the buck bedded down. I pulled back with Luna and he finished the job. #3 The third call today was in my favorite place to track…..the Adirondacks. I met the hunter in town at a gas station, did our paperwork, called DEC, and off we went. We went 12 miles deep on logging roads which was a slow drive. When we got there I asked the guys if they were bank robbers and this was their hideout. Talk about secluded! The hunter shot a big buck this morning and it went down, then got up and was leaving the area when he shot at it again. It turns out the second shot missed. They had tracked 150-200 yards, then lost blood. Kunox got locked on and showed me a little blood along the way. The hunter had marked last blood with toilet paper and Kunox walked us right past it. We continued for another 150 yards with no blood when Kunox put his head back and was clearly air scenting. He got off the track and started pulling me to the right, and 25 yards away there lay a beautiful buck. B0163151-2B4B-47B7-B48F-E6466EDB9FFE.MOV E J, nywaw, cdbing and 26 others 29
