I actually know a guy that did this. Over 10 years ago... But he did it cause he had a live trap and swore it was the same squirrel that kept coming back after he released it a couple miles away.  Figured if he painted it red and caught it again he'd know.

Another reason might be to extend his hunting season  or bag limit.  I think reds can be hunted year round and there is no bag limit.

My FIL did that (water based paint!)!to some rabbits that were demolishing his garden. And he even caught a painted one once....once!!

Keep him in the trap for a week with nothing but one can of spray paint.  Thirst and curiosity are a bad mix.

60 something years old, there was a reason he was doing it and I want to know what it was. 

 

I'm not saying I agree with what he did, but 3 counts of attempting to poison animals, wut?
