All kidding aside, REAL Red squirrels probably arent regulated cuz noone hunts them anymore .  If there were as many Squirrel hunters as there are Deer hunters, rest assured the state would regulate them, too.

At least you realized I was kidding

The ones in the article have a Rustoleum  flavor .

My parents lived on Lake RD in Webster countless 100 foot oaks, so squirrel city, which my Dad went to war with as they ate the bird seed from the feeders .

He trapped them then gassed them with his homemade gas camber ,ran off the lawn mower exhaust.

His neighbor trapped them and released them in Webster park , painting them would have been a neat experiment, to see if any returned ,like salmon.

A friends father used to trap them and then spray paint the tails black before he released them far away. One time my friend went to check the trap and saw a squirrel in it. He got the bright idea to spray paint the tail black so the father thought one of the squirrels made it back. His father was pissed when he went back and saw a squirrel with black tail. Don't think he ever told him what he did

I've eaten red squirrel, sans paint. They don't very much like grays, more gamey and a little tougher. I still hunt them once in a while On the private land I hunt up north, but these days people look at you funny and pitch a fit if you are hunting in the Summer on public land. I rarely bother with them during the normal small game seasons. I wait until Summer when they think they are safe, and then I get even for all those times they ran over my boots while I was deer hunting.
