What is it about ice fishing that makes these guys lose their minds? Remember a few years ago when a bunch refused rescue from a floating piece of ice on Lake Erie??

These guys have float suits  but to rescue them would need to get boat there thru unfrozen mud then into water deep enough to get there ..by then they are frozen to death with hypothermia..  personaly id watch them freeze to death and chalk it up to natural selection..

Having open water on a part of the lake in no way means that where they are is unsafe.  It never looks good from shore, but safe ice is safe ice.  I've done this, but only when we had ample, safe ice.  The question here is if the ice is safe or not.

I live 1/4 mile from the lake  on top of a hill my  1 acre pond has just over an inch.  There is no way this is safe as well as it being on outflow ..  these guys were survival suits but by time help gets there they are still  dead.

Every year same thing on Oneida. Multiple rescues. Sylvan beach had to buy a hovercraft for them.  There is a business on the lake that just does snowmobile and 4 wheeler extraction from the lake.  Legion has the best fish fry around for $10. No way I'm going out there.

We went out on 2" gin clear ice on Case years ago. 2.5 auger turns and through, I about crapped my pants

I won't do less than 3 1/2" myself and prefer 5" or more when we have large groups of ice fishermen.  When we were kids, we had a local duck pond that was less than 6' deep.  We played chicken on the ice to see who could go the furthest without falling through.  We always fell through, but could stand up and get back out.  Then it was a quick run to my buddy Doug's house to strip off our clothes and toss them in the dryer while borrowing a pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt to get by while the clothes were drying.  Good times
