"William Franklin Stamey Jr., who had a previous poaching conviction and obviously did not learn from his poor choice, received a felony conviction for his latest misdeeds, which cost him $12,500 in restitution, along with fines and court costs. "

This means he can no longer possess firearms; an additional deserved punishment IMO.

Wasn't  hunting with a licence to begin with,  ,a lifetime ban is meaningless to a poacher.  Idk  the proper punishment perhaps  confined  to  job and home with ankle monitor.  For 10 years..

Better punishment than what he would have gotten in NY. NY probably would have fined him $500 suspended his license for 5 years and made him apologize to the land owner.

Come on, it's NY,  he would of got lifetime license and tags for the rest of his life. And  it would be the landowners fault for him being the way he is.:D

no i know for a fact it would've been $1,000 for poaching a deer at night, let alone multiple violations. used to be able to be pleaded down to a minimum of $250. as the legislative committee chair for the National Deer Association NY Advisory Council I met with legislators to get it increased. Got watered waaayyy down in the process to "be acceptable to the group" for a floor vote. Minimum now $500 but that doubles with prior poaching convictions like he had. They had an "accomplice" we did have it in the bill that fines would double again if a minor/youth was accompanying them. Blew my mind how little poaching was taken seriously in general and how it had to be watered down to be acceptable with a good chance of passing. it was like populated areas with more legislative reps are overrun with deer, so poaching isn't much of a concern for them. idk.

A lifetime ban dont mean crap to a criminal, Hell do it again.

i still think it should happen so they can't hunt somewhere else for enjoyment. Agreed though.  Having no license isn't going to stop them.
