nywaw Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Saw this condition over the last few years on a few deer here at my house in NJ. Then EHD hit and I thought it was gone. Now this deer showed up today. Mange?
Bucksnbows Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 According to @Rustyit could be something like mange or lice. nywaw 1 "A sinking fly is closer to Hell" - Anonymous https://www.troutscapes.com https://nativefishcoalition.org/national-board

mowin Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 We'll, that's gotta be tuff keeping warm. Cabin Fever 1
grampy Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Never seen anything quite like that on a deer here. Got to be some type of mange or parasite? Bucksnbows 1
DoubleDose Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Sure looks like mange. She will not survive prolonged extreme cold (especially wet) conditions with that much hair loss. A deer's stomach is a large furnace, and the fat is fuel, but it's hair is the insulation.
fletchny11 Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 Looks like some weird issue with neck, shoulder area as well as the hair loss. Bad shape
Dinorocks Posted December 20, 2022 Posted December 20, 2022 A friend posted the photo below…not sure where it is…assuming somewhere in NY. I’m meeting with a NYSDEC deer biologist tomorrow and will ask about both. Cabin Fever and nywaw 2

Not as unusual as you might think. Looks horrible. Rusty can confirm, but I believe the meat is fine. crappyice Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 I sent your HD pic to the guy who runs out deer management progam... his response is below. And I can't imagine being able to eat that warted up deer with any confidence! nywaw 1
nywaw Posted December 21, 2022 Author Posted December 21, 2022 Interesting. Of all the places I bait, the only place I see this occurring is at my house. Same bait supplier/farmer for all spots.
