EsoxManiac Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Has anyone else noticed a decline in the amount of fish they catch on the wacky rig because i am not doing as nearly as well as i used to this year and last year and was trying to come up with answers on why (Personally i have been using gary yamamoto)
grampy Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 The Senko has successfully been widely used for a very long time now. Bass in just about any body of water have seen it, and or been caught by it numerous times. What happens is eventually fish become acclimated to a certain shape or presentation, and won't bite it as often. You can try instead of the wacky rig, making the Senko presentation a little different. Put a small nail weight in one end. Texas rig it. Use on a quarter ounce jig head. Just something different that perhaps the fish haven't seen. The Senko can still flat out catch bass! Just have to use different techniques and let the fish tell you what they want. I've been using the Ned Rig alot the last couple years. That is my go to when fishing gets tough. ZMan baits seem to work the best for me. 1/10 ounce heads and the tickler are killer! Wolc123 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Pretty much any store bought lure is going to exhibit the same type of diminishing returns, as the fish get educated on them. One way around that is to make your own stuff. I remember folks were really knocking the heck out of the smallmouth with the ned rig, when that first came out a few years ago. Even that seems to be trailing off a bit now, according to some folks I know who use them a lot.

This is true with any store bought bait. In my bass tournament days, I cashed checks by NOT doing what everyone else was doing.

My own bass tournament experience is limited to just one, that a neighbor kid talked me into entering with him. For that, each 2-man team was allowed to enter 6 bass, but (3) had to be largemouth and (3) had to be smallmouth. He didn’t tell me ahead of time about the “half and half” rule. Maybe he wasn’t aware of it. Anyhow, I had no clue where to find largemouth on the upper Niagara River. I thought maybe I could follow some of them fancy bass boats to find some, but they all were over the horizon, before my old scow was up on plane. We entered (3) smallmouth and placed 4th overall. They paid the top 3 spots. We did get our entry fee back at least with the money for the “biggest fish”. We most likely had the three biggest fish, but that wasn’t enough to bump out the three teams who finished ahead of us, and each weighed in (6). I’ll never forget the sight of that kid walking up to the scale with the fork of his biggest bass (maybe 6 or 7 lbs) tail sticking up out of an orange 5 gallon Home Depot bucket. He had tried to get one of those plastic weigh bags from Cabelas the day before, but they were sold out. We used our hand-made lures on all those big smallmouth, which I suspect were too “educated” for the Ned rigs that the other guys were throwing. That same kid just used one of those same home made lures to take his PB walleye out on Lake Erie with me, earlier this season. His dad is going to get it mounted for him for Christmas (12 lb fat 30 incher). The ruler on the back of my boat only goes up to 26” , but there were a couple DEC guys at the boat lunch who measured it when we pulled the boat out. Edited July 5, 2024 by Wolc123 grampy 1
Robhuntandfish Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 (edited) Love the Senkos.. one of if not the best bass lure ever. Unless your fishing heavily pressured fish then it not the lure but more often the presentation. If your fishing the same spots over and over again with the same lure then yes your results will get worse. Because you've educated fish maybe but you've also exhausted the bass that are hitting that pattern in that spot. Like said here try different tactics but also try different sizes. I've been in places where a 4" or even a 3" would be tops over the standard 5" wacky rig. Personally the 4 " rigged weedless was always my favorite. Best day on a bass water I went thru like 9 bags of senkos . Lol. They def don't last long. I like wacky rig off of weed lines with a drop but I prefer the weedless Texas style rig in shallow and to skip under brush and trees and docks. If it's the same body of water maybe the forage base has changed. And before a senko rigged wacky was a good duplicate. Maybe it's changed from shad to bluegill that the bass are now feeding on and a bigger profile lure will work better. Lots of possibilities and variables. My brother in law always used those when we fish for largemouth at his place up on the St Lawrence. He puts his hook thru an o-ring near the center and they last quite a bit longer that way, than just running the hook thru them. Not weedless that way, but work well along the edges of the weeds. He swears it’s all about the color and he usually always tries to find the same color (some kind of dark blue or purple I think). I never use the things. He sometimes catches more than I do, on my slow rolled big chartreuse willowleaf spinnbaits and big weedless bass jigs with rubber trailer. I usually always get the biggest ones though.
Buckmaster7600 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Not much of a bass guy but when I do go after them a senko is rigged, they also work awesome on walleyes.

This day I went thru 9 bags I also caught 84 12"+ bass. Lol. Epic day. Every patch of lilly pads they were stacked in. And every nice bass that broke water seemed to toss a senko. Lol.
