My plow tractor’s broke down.  Fortunately it happened after I finished plowing this spring and after I had half of my corn planted (that’s the other job I like it best for).  Hopefully, I can get it running again over the winter.

My early sweetcorn is starting to make ears.  I’m going to get some dog proof traps in it tonight.

One down and no idea how many to go.  Hopefully, the coyotes start helping me out soon, on the coon control.  That’s one thing that I like them for.  We’ll have to see how many days it takes them to dig this one up.  Trapped last night, Shot and killed this morning, will burry when I get home.

If they just dig them up, why bother?

NY state DEC requirement, carcasses of “damaging” coons must be “burried or burned” prior to the opening of regular trapping season.  After that opens, they can simply be tossed out to feed the buzzards.

They don’t specify how deep they must be burried.  I have tried various depths but all that accomplished is changing how many days it takes for the coyotes to find them and did them up.  I generally go with about 6” of soil on top of them now, so the depth of the hole depends on the size and number of coons on it.

Never buried a coon, ever.  They are usually gone the next day.

Hopefully, it’s gone when I get home from work.  Otherwise, Im burying to stay within DEC compliance.  I don’t like to let the live coons expire from heat stroke in the summer, so I usually kill them with an earshot from my .22, just after sunrise.  No time to bury before work on weekdays though.

IMG_4892.thumb.jpeg.f636f95ccb4b3e7f4ae9732b282816d5.jpegAnother one this morning in the same trap.  I should have staked it a little farther away.  He was able to reach a couple of ears and nock them down.
I wonder if it was him who knocked over the shovel I used for his partner.

The buzzards had that one half gutted when I got home yesterday,  maybe they will have this one cleaned up completely and save me the trouble of burying.
