Phantom
What type of public land do you hunt on? Do you hunt on public land with no access or public land with access? Just wondering because I know people who have private land that borders public land with no public access, no parking lots, and no clear entry points. This is different than public land with easily accessible access points with parking lots. Can make a big difference in how good the hunting is in these places . blackbeltbill

Sterling Forest State Park has State Land that is completely " LandLocked" and Huntable-- with absolutely Zero access to it. Backs in 1999- The Doris Duke Organization had a good 1,500 Acres in the Town of Tuxedo and lifted it to NY . One Stipulation-- No Hunting Allowed. This was granted. What this did however was completely " LandLock" a huge portion of " Monroe" State Land. Because to the North is the Appalachian Trail along with a 1/4mile buffer on either side of the Appalachian Trail. No Hunting on this Buffer or even crossing with Your Gun unloaded to get to the Landlocked area. So- since 1999- absolutely no way to get to this- Legal to Hunt State Land. The ALLIS TRAIL runs right through it. There is one Woods Road that connects to Benjamin Meadow Road . A sizable Parking lot is right off this road. I wrote to the Manager of Sterling Forest State Park in 1999 and again 10 years later. A no go. Anybody here can bring up the Hunting Map of Sterling Forest State Park to view the LandLocked Huntable State Land. Phantom 1 Take The Multiple Use Area Challenge. Swamp_bucks
There’s usually always a way in, sometimes a phone call to local DEC to see where the right a ways are located. I’ve knocked on a door and got permission to park and walk the edge of property and into spots. Im currently waiting for DEC/county to get back to me on a piece. It’s right next to the road but connects to 300 acres of county and state owned land. Want to make sure I can legally hunt it. Most don’t realize it’s there because it’s not marked. There's a place I used to hunt that's completely surrounded by private land, except for a single point where it touches the main road. However, parking is prohibited at that spot. Ironically, there's another location 2 miles up the road where hunting is not allowed, but parking is permitted. This means you have to park there and walk 1.5 miles down the road to access the area you want to hunt. blackbeltbill

I’ve had my wife follow me to park at a main spot and drop me at the other entrance and then have her meet me back at that spot or just walk back. Usually at most 3/4-1 mile. I also do this from time to time so people don’t know where I’m hunting. Versatile Hunter
