GreenDrake Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 We put up a third box blind yesterday on the property in the area we call “The Hole”. Its a big bowl at the furthest tip of the property. Bordered by a deep ravine behind…and ag up top. Truly beautiful part if the property and gets heavy chasing action during the rut. So now we have a change of scenery rather than my wife open food plots. I have 3 more to put up throughout the woods. Im just happy to have my own ground to use them again. Own ground, did you purchase or lease?
The Back 40 Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 @GreenDrake Question on the construction. Are you using just a single 2x4 in the corners for your vertical supports or did you use (2) 2x4's attached in an "L" shape? I'm working on my first enclosed blind and I'm looking to reduce weight and wasted material as much as possible while still maintaining strength. I have a tendency to over build things so I'm going against my own nature. The_Real_TCIII 1
grampy Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 Good luck in that awesome blind!! Looks to be in a great spot!!!
Bolt Action Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 Looks like a good setup and a good location! What are the dimensions of the blind?
GreenDrake Posted September 7, 2024 Author Posted September 7, 2024 I bought 150 acres in 6k 3 years ago. 20 tillable and all in food plots…soybeans…clover…brassicas…for now. Going to start building our dream in the spring. Have had an excavator on site 3 summers now reshaping the entire frontage. It sits high off the road so a lot of water management etc. bug project. I’ve cut 100 trees..mostly junk ash but a fair amount of maple and hickory. My woods is loaded with hickory. the stands are 4x6. I built 6 of them 10 years ago snd had them on 2 different properties. They will all go in up here…3 in so far. i build them in panels. Front and back walls are full length. Sides framed between. L in the corners. I screw to the rim joists through the bottom plate then screw the side walls stud to the rear end studs. My sheathing on the side walks extends to cover the ends of the front walls. I then screw those ends into the ends of the front snd back walls to lock it in tight. I used treated 2x4 for the walls on the first 3….then 2x3 on the other 3. Lighter to carry up the ladder (now I use my loader on occasion) they have held up just fine. Treated plywood for the sheathing. I can set one up in 45 minutes now. They are nice mobile units. I was building one a night in the garage once I got going. I build them for my aging father who has now passed. He hunted in comfort. Now my wife sits with me. We have a ball together. Any new builds will be 6x6. When I built these they were all on hedgerows n property lines so no shooting behind me. Now I can shoot 360 so the extra 2 feet will help spin around. I am going to build one 20 feet up in the middle of 2 big plots. That will be a permanent build. Caeden4 and The Back 40 2
Wolc123 Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 (edited) Speaking of box blinds, I’ve still got to get the one in the corner of my splitter/tractor shed ready in time for early antlerless gun season, which starts next week Saturday. In order to minimize the pressure on my dirt at home during the week, that’s where I’m hunting on most weekday evenings after work. The awp that I planted Tuesday, 75 yards away, should be a big draw by then, especially with the good rain that’s falling now as I type. Fixing up that blind will be a good rainy day project later today. I’ve got to make a replacement crank handle for the window that overlooks the food plots, and see how my Caldwell shooting bag fits the window sill. Ive also got to move my comfortable shop office chair into that corner and make a little shelf there for my binoculars and shooting supplies. Im expecting early antlerless gun season and Holliday ML season to be the two best times for that tractor shed blind. The turnip plot just behind the fresh awp ought to be prime by Holliday time. Anther little plot of that way out back is keeping the pressure off of the front plot now. There’s still a little sweetcorn left to the left of the turnips up front, which should provide early antlerless gun season draw, and the “best ever” RR corn to the right should be a prime draw thru the Holliday season. I’ll move my tractor and Bushhog back into the main section of the barn (in front of my truck camper that will back in there in its winter spot by next Sunday afternoon), for that week at least. That will give me a little more elbow room from that shooting position. I’ll probably also put the hitch carrier on the Durango field car for carcass recovery (yes Belo, I will affix the carcass tag first to stay in full compliance with NY state DEC regulations. I’ve also secured shooting permission from my neighbor to the east (only other building owner within 500 ft). I’ve just got to hope that the deer don’t notice that little crank out widow swung open when I’m hunting. It should be considerably more comfortable, and a slightly shorter range shot than my bedroom window up in the house, which I’ve use previously. Edited September 7, 2024 by Wolc123
