Third year heading up to northern Maine for the bear hunting season with Allagash Wildlife Sporting Camps out of Allagash Maine. Previous couple years have been hot with lots of natural food. This year much different. 11 hunters in camp. 8 tagged bears and 10 had opportunity. New guy had taken over with over 20 yrs of bear guiding experince. Making it his own business with the handed over keys to 130 or so square miles of territory. First day I had a big 7+' boar come in 6 minutes after legal light. I passed and watched him for about 20 minutes at the barrel mostly broadsided. Second day same monster bear came in 9 minutes before end of legal light but smelled something he didn't like at the barrel. Pulled a 180 and slowly walked off before hitting the clear shooting lane. Came back 20 minutes or so later. Walked broadedsided behind the barrel and I passed him again due to legal light. In not good with weight but outfitter said it was a 500 ish pound bear.

Third day I had a smaller 150ish lb boar come into the barrel very skittish not looking to get mauled. Perfect wind and everything with 22 minutes of legal light left. Over estimated shot placement with his body postion. Tracked that night and next morning 180+yards on OnX as the crow flies through uncomfortably thick stuff to be after a bear. Lost blood and track on an old slash and skidder trail. just following general bear sign at the point down multiple trails so we called it. I believe I clipped liver. No lungs and no guts. Follow up shot I put into the ham and its back left leg. Gut punch like no other. I last 2 days I had no sightings of bear in a different spot. Spot was frequented by a 300ish fully mature dry sow.

I did helped others successfully recover their bears though with various hard tracks and dead bears that didn't death moan to give up the place they fell. Came home with bear meat and a moose shed antler though.

How much is the hunt if you don't mind me asking? One of my neighbors is trying to get me to go on a black bear hunt in alberta. But it's like $5K plus 2 flights and 8 hour drive to sleep on a cot in a tent lol. I can't swing no wifi for 8-10 days with work.

This place now has wifi at kitchen where everyone eats. Marginal cell service where you sleep in cabins. Nothing otherwise. About a 12.5 hr drive. We got locked in at low hunt cost as multiple in our group have been going for over 20 yrs but price is likely going up next year. Possibly 2500 to 3000 if I'm going to guess what it will end up being based on other outfitters up there. Guided, meals, and lodging for 1 night and 5 days. 3 meals per day. Close to 200 for bear license and tag. 18 per day gate fee to enter North Maine woods. Add other expenses like snacks, merch at local places, taxidermy, and ($250+) butchering. Not an expensive hunt. Kayaks and canoes available too for a river trip when you don't hunt.

Some trail cam pics of the monster I let go as I somehow felt the need to be a boyscout and didn't be a guest on the show of Northwoods law. Also a pic from the stand. Outfitter said 500ish lbs. Scent rag in first picture with bear standing up against the tree is at about 6'-3". Second pic head on coming from back behind the barrel, etc. 3rd pic closer to same distance away as barrel. I've got more on card  but these taken from pics of slide show played in kitchen/mess hall where we eat. Paw print is what was left from 2nd day sighting.

oh man. can't believe you passed him

I can. Whole camp and everyone busted my balls. Good news is he'll be there next year unless he dies of old age which I doubt. My spot is already picked out. Plus cam being left up to possibly catch the smaller one I didn't get. We were the only group this year. 130 or so square miles of territory I think he's safe. lol
