Enzo and I went to Cranberry Mountain WMA for opening day. This was my first opening day as last year was my first season in field and I started after opening day. No kills but we saw two pheasants and a woodcock.  It was crowded and pressured but all the guys were nice. Definitely want to go back when less crowded. Enzo enjoyed running the fields and meeting other dogs!

They are stocking more birds this year and further into the season. There should be plenty of oppourtunities.

I noticed a big improvement!

@Joe T

It’s my first time posting here (I’m not really into social media etc), but I’ve seen your posts on getting started upland hunting  and figured I should reach out.

I’m in a similar position to you - only picked up hunting a few years ago, after I got my lab, and have been mainly teaching myself. So far I’ve been focused on grouse and woodcock hunting (with some state released pheasants in the mix), and have finally gotten to the point where I can reliably find birds. (Waterfowl has been another story - still haven’t made much progress other than the occasional jump shot).

Given that it’s been a tough learning curve for me (I’ve put on a lot of miles trying to figure out where the birds are), I figure I should do the right thing and at least offer some help.

For grouse, I hunt in Delaware county, north of Rt 17 (up by Roscoe and Deposit). It’s a bit of a drive (I live downstate), but a leader of the local RGS chapter said it has the best bird numbers in the area, and it’s been well worth it for me. There’s a lot of public land, between the state forests and the NY watershed properties. OnX has been a huge help.

To the extent you make a trip to hunt this area in the fall, feel free to let me know. I’d be happy to show you a few spots or offer some guidance.

@TSJ thanks for the great offer and I may take you up on that.  I am going to be up in Cooperstown in a few weeks and @Swamp_bucks is giving me a lead on some grouse areas.  How far downstate are you?  I am on Long Island and waterfowl hunt on Fire Island and would be glad to take you along sometime.

I would love to hear more about your journey with your lab- how is he doing and how did you train him?

Yes that’s it!  No ticks yesterday thankfully!

Check out Great Swamp in that same area. The parking lot is small only holds 6 cars or so and I used to really enjoy that spot-some big fields up top and then below some hardwoods. Also some really thick nasty stuff off to the right when coming in from the parking lot that holds birds longer since most guys don't want to deal with navigating shoulder high brush. My Brittany loved it in there later in the season and during weekdays.

I was there once and a guy was sitting in car waiting for a spot. I said I was going to go to Cranberry and the guy said hang out a bit I just heard a bunch of shots. Sure enough 15 minutes later two guys came up with their limit and freed up two spots. We hunted together and both got ours.
