Wasn’t sure what forum.  But looking for thoughts on cost of new furnace with installation.  4000sf 2 story home with another 1200sf in finished basement.  Most windows have been replaced and insulation seems good.  Outside AC was replaced 10 years ago but not sure if that must be replaced with furnace.  Just trying to get an idea of what is reasonable. Have some appointments scheduled.

Can’t help you on cost but your outside AC should work with your new furnace.   Our first furnace was installed in 1981 and the outside air conditioning unit was installed in 2001.  The 1981 furnas was replaced in 2013 and that “newer” one is still working good with the 2001 AC unit.
I am assuming your furnas is natural gas forced air.

I paid $7500 for new a/c and furnace about a year and a half ago.  1700sqft and a lukewarm basement……..I know nothing like your abode but some food for thought.

Forced air  and natural gas I’ll assume?  (Mine is)

I’d guess they’ll try and push you to a new a/c system too, I surely can’t opine on that.

My son in law is a journeyman in the  sheet metal union .

His boss did our new furnace and ac on the side . The big  guys with fleets of vans quoted me at 12K , I paid them 7500 cash .

text me if you wish I can send you contact info . Get some quotes ,then you can compare.

Yes gas and forced air.  I appreciate the info.  I have a feeling this will be another sticker shock moment.  lol.  I knew it was coming and used it when negotiating the purchase of the house 2 years ago.  But still not happy about it.  Repair is $1500 but don’t want to throw good money at a furnace that will need replacing soon anyways.  At 26yrs old, it’s nearing the end or maybe it’s here.

I’ve got a guy!! He put in a furnace for us at our old house. A gazillion time cheaper than our other quotes. Has house for 10yrs, it only had one little part that needed replacement and was under warranty. He’s a one man band. Dm if you want his info.

Piece of mind……..priceless

And of course I know anything can happen with a new furnace too but being in the northeast, you have to prepare best you can.

Do you have a standby generator?

I dont like having just one of any piece of critical equipment.  We have (2) small ng furnaces (one for each wing) of our 2000 sq for L-shaped ranch house.  They don’t work too hard because a wood stove provides most of the heat when it’s real cold out.

Just the slightly bigger ng furnas works with the AC.  That wing runs about 2 degrees cooler than the other, during the hot days of summer.  The smaller ng furnas is set in cool mode with the fan on auto and it draws cooler air from the basement, where both furnaces are located.

The motherboard crapped out on the bigger furnas last year and it cost around $ 400 to replace by the installer.

Large installer quoted $15,500 for new 120,000 btu furnace, new coil and 5 ton ac unit.  Lifetime on ac unit, coil and heat exchanger, 10yr on parts and 1yr on labor.  Talked him down to 13,500.  Also includes separate sensors for upstairs for thermostat and new full programmable thermostat.  Frankly it’s about what I expected.

Sounds right. I was going to say $12-$15K.
