Joe T Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 (edited) Today, Enzo and I met my friend Jeremy for a duck hunt on a private piece of land with a large beaver pond that I leased through LandTrust. @DKsWorld took a look at the OnX map of the property and accurately predicted that the ducks would gather at the south end (see attached pic). He was right but we set up along the northwest trail as the typography made setting up on that northern position impossible. Below is the view in 2 pictures looking south from our three man portable blind. Driving up to Cooperstown I listened to a Ducks Unlimited Podcast and the topic was Duck calls. Jeremy did a super job with friendly calls and you could see them perk up when he did. They responded with some eating calls parentheses there’s a video below of this. On the way to Cooperstown, I was listening to a Ducks Unlimited Podcast podcast and they were talking about calling amongst other topics. My hunting companion did the calling and based on what I learned from the podcast, he did a really good job. He focused on his hello call And made sure he didn’t overdo it . It really helped me incorporate what I learned from the podcast. The long and short of the story is that while we did not get any birds, I did learn a tremendous amount. Got to use some new equipment and toys and Geri got a chance to try out some new guns. Oh, and I almost forgot… I made breakfastof eggs, ham, and bacon, which we all enjoyed IMG_2737.mov Edited October 20, 2024 by Joe T mowin, Bucksnbows, broomeguy and 5 others 8
CharlieNY Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Joe glad to hear you had an enjoyable time. You have the right attitude, it's not about whether you get any birds or not. You are never too old to learn and you will find that each and every time you go hunting will be a learning experience. And that goes for Enzo too! DKsWorld 1
Joe T Posted October 20, 2024 Author Posted October 20, 2024 Thanks @CharlieNY- I only wish I had picked this up in my 30s instead of my 60s- how much fun I’ve missed! But like you say, it’s never too late! DKsWorld and CharlieNY 2
virgil Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 (edited) Are you going up there again when the season reopens? I think ducks and geese overlap in November. Could you cross the pond in a canoe to set up on the other side? Edited October 20, 2024 by virgil
Joe T Posted October 20, 2024 Author Posted October 20, 2024 I thought about maybe when it overlaps and if you cross in canoe it’s another persons property virgil 1
