mowin Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Couple years ago, a buddy gave me a Primos bloodhunter HD flashlight. I haven't had the chance to use it until the NJ bear hunt. I was really surprised how well it worked to "illuminate" the blood. It made finding those little drops and pin drops much easier. I definitely recommend one. Especially for us older guys, our eyesight isn't as sharp as it once was. Bucksnbows, Nomad, nywaw and 6 others 9

Belo Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Man I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't $64 lol. I've heard these were crap, maybe they improved on the old ones. Caeden4, grampy, dbHunterNY and 1 other 4 "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12

But there was 3 other guys with me on the blood trail, and all agreed it definitely works. One downside, it's beam is "washed" out with a regular flashlight.
nywaw Posted October 22 Posted October 22 That looks pretty neat. Like Belo, I heard these didn't work well in the past, but maybe they improved them a bunch. The best tracking light I've ever used was a lantern. That's what my buddy uses out in ND. Maybe it was the conditions we were tracking in out in ND, but that lit up blood on the tall grass wayyyy better than a flashlight could. I've never tried one out this way. Out here I use my headlamp and a handheld flashlight. grampy 1

Out here I use my headlamp and a handheld flashlight. My only experience is with this particular light. I also heard they didn't work well. Many times, I'd spot blood, and Scott would shine his light on it, and the drop would disappear. He'd then remove his light, and it was easily visible. There's different blood lights out there, but I have no idea if those are as effective as this one was. grampy and nywaw 2

grampy Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Many years ago I tried one with red and blue lights. It was garbage, but was nowhere near the cost of this one. Having tracked for almost three decades with deer search I've tried a lot of lights. A good handheld LED, with adjustable brightness, along with a good head mount LED seems to work best for me. Also, don't forget to pick up a couple rolls of biodegradable, orange, surveyors tape to mark your blood. It can be seen easily at night. And gives you a line of travel to look at when the blood gets on the light side. Belo and cervidchasers 2

It's funny, my dad taught me to use toilet paper for blood trailing and it's all I still use. Very easy to see, backtrack, etc. I've seen guys use the non biodegradable surveyor tape and it winds up being there for years unfortunately. IM Hooked, cynthiafu, grampy and 2 others 5

Just one more thing to clean afterwards though. The orange plastic ones do tend to twist under tension, I always felt that tool would be better if it was made of metal. IM Hooked 1
mowin Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 Laugh all you want at the blood light. I was until I used it. On a double lung hit, not needed. A drop or pin drop every few feet, I'm a believer. cervidchasers 1
