Had a swell morning in the woods today. I got to the parking area around 6:30, and waited about 15 minutes before starting my hike in. I like to hunt my way in and out so I wait until shouting light to start my hunt. The walk in was quiet and uneventful. I climbed into my stand around 7:30.

My stand faces due south with a steep ridge to the east and a hill behind me draining south.

Around 9:00 a group of does and a small buck came walking south across the ridge to the east. They were about 35 yards away but moving right by not feeding on their way to bed in the thick vegetation in the drainage. Around 9:45 a few does worked their way back up to about 50 yards directly in front of me. They browsed a little and eventually bed down. Over the next 2 hours they worked the area intermittently, not once did they notice me.

Around 11:30 the other group of does that worked by me early worked their way back north. After they worked their way by the group of 4 in front of me got up a little frantic. I heard further down the drainage a loud grunt, then another grunt, and another. At this point I'm getting excited. The buck is working his way to the does grunting his fool head off. He grunts non stop for a good 5 minutes as the does scurry into the dense brush. When he gets to where I can see him he's a little forky buck, split on the left and single spike horn on the right.

I watched him do his thing for a few more minutes until he disappeared out of site. Everything was quiet by about 12:45. All in all it was a great morning. Despite not firing a shot the morning was full of action and a good study on what the deer are doing.

I've had stupidly limited time lately to hunt. I have checked cams and kept an eye on the weather and other conditions when I get a little time here and there. I've hunted a few sits now. Bucks are cruising for sure, but batchelor groups are still somewhat together. Bucks are pushing doe but not aggressively. I grunted in a 2.5 yr old buck I got a glimpse of that I thought was bigger at first. If you find a hot doe then action will be pretty intense with multiple bucks around. That's my current take on things.
