Popular Post Dinorocks Posted November 9 Popular Post Posted November 9 With lots of planning and preparation, I made it back up to the ADK’s for another trapping adventure! After getting my wall tent up yesterday (solo in a windstorm…very challenging), I had some daylight remaining to get part of one of my trap lines out. I set for a variety of animals using a variety of different sets…I maybe got 20 traps out. It sometimes takes a few days for the traps to sit before attracting some of the more wary critters. My son was up visiting my daughter at St Lawrence University for the weekend and took a drive to meet me on my first check….he has been with me on this trip since he was about 10 yrs old but has not been able to join me since he started college 4 yrs ago. He brought me some luck! A very old female bobcat in the first trap which was also within view of my camp (blind set in a trail around the pond I’m camping near), a beautiful male grey fox in a step down dirt hole, and a couple muskrat. I just finished skinning, fleshing and boarding my catch as it got dark and getting gear ready to set some more traps tomorrow. I'm camping in a slightly different area this year due to some beaver flooding…I hear a beaver splashing water with his tail as I type this! I’m planning to get some beaver traps out towards the end of my trip. Fingers crossed for a successful check in the morning…might do some deer hunting late tomorrow afternoon after I set a few more traps…if I have time. Good luck to those chasing game in the woods! Dinorocks Posted November 11 Author Posted November 11 Check #2 (Sunday) yielded a big male fisher, 2 prime coon, a few small muskrats (only have 3 rat sets out), and a possum. Got all my fur put up and chopped up some of carcasses for bait…the chickadees like the fat…everything else gets put in a hole I dug…I keep the skulls and I kept the glands…and will eat some of the beaver and muskrat (I’m having bobcat for dinner tonight). Very rainy last night…I’m always surprised on how the canvas doesn’t leak…I have several very nice modern tents that leak! Lots of owls talking all night! This morning’s catch included a fat sow coon, another possum, a muskrat, and a skunk (that sprayed). I put everything up and spent some time cleaning up the feet on the fox, bobcat, and fisher…I skin out the claws on most of the animals I catch. I did some scouting on a new area and set a few more traps. I’m anxious to start trapping the beaver in the pond next to me. I heard a big tree fall last night and checked it out this morning…busy beavers. I have a couple otter sets out that could catch a beaver…I don’t want to be stuck skinning beavers all night so I need to make sure I don’t have too many beaver traps out at one time. My wife is going to visit for a couple days next week, and my plan is to have some fresh skinned beavers in baggies ready for her to bring home and put in the freezer… I can put them up later. I do plan to board a couple at my camp but I need to improvise on the board…maybe I’ll put it on a hoop…the fleshing and boarding process is time consuming for me…but satisfying! Looking forward to setting a new trap line tomorrow. Happy Veterans Day! BowmanMike, SilentStalker, nywaw and 19 others 22

Versatile Hunter Posted November 12 Posted November 12 That's a huge fisher! Is the bobcat as good as they say it tastes? The Back 40 1

It's not bad,I find mountain lion has a better taste but bobcat is a bit more tender muskrat and coon is a bit stringy, beaver isn't to bad Versatile Hunter 1
