I'm champing at the bit to get out there on Saturday. My FIL may be joining me here on my property. What I take out in the woods will be based on where I'm sitting and that will be based on the wind which I can't check until tomorrow on Huntstand. Either way I will be out all day and even if I don't get anything in the woods, I will be going to Heintzelman's BBQ for dinner for my MIL's B-day. So either way, it will be a good day, and the weather looks great for Saturday.

Sounds like an awesome day planned!  Good luck to you and enjoy that BBQ at the end of the day!!!

There will be 6 of us on the two farms I hunt. All family and friends.  I think my savage 6.5 is getting the first up to bat.

There will be probably 15+ at our private butcher shop Saturday evening swapping lies and eating too much.  Looking forward to it.

Clothes and gear all packed. Venison Wellington prep tonight for Friday night dinner. Heading out tomorrow after work at 4 for camp. Staying til Monday. I’ll be hunting with my Browning BPS. Bought 2 new cantilever barrel last year for it.  (I for me, the other for my brother) Been a process to get them ready. Had the camo dipping  removed down to original blueing by a local company. Had to send barrels back to Browning as there was a modification done to the receiver since my dad bought them for us so the barrels needed to be adjusted. But the scope is mounted, and she is sighted in. Been seeing a lot of deer at camp. And the last of the venison came out of the freezer for Wellington Friday night so a nice fat doe on Saturday at some point would be good. Lol.

My father is 81. Had some health issues the last couple weeks.  In the ER at the VA last night for a few hours. Dr appt today at 1. He’s hoping to at least get down to camp. He’s been the first one out of the woods on opening day for quite a few years now. Said last night he enjoys getting back and having coffee ready and waiting for people to get back to camp.  Some sit all day, some til morning but we all get the same “Well??” when we walk in the door. Says he’s not going to hunt “just hoping he can hold down the fort” till we get back. His grandson (my nephew from California) will be using the Ithaca Deer Slayer my dad bought in 1973. He gave it to me in 2014. Would love to see my nephew be the 3rd generation to get a deer with it.

Good luck to everyone this weekend. Strap up before you go up!!  Shoot straight!!  Be safe!!  Safety on!!!

All set to go in WMU 4-H, in the Albany county hilltowns. I'll be carrying my Sako 85 Classic, in 270, chambered with my own handloaded 140g Hornady SST's. I have chosen a spot between two very thick bedding areas. That also lead to food. Hope to see one of the shooter bucks that I didn't get during the archery season.

Spending time with my hunting partner is always fun. As we both are so busy all the time. We have been friends since we rode the same school bus together. We now, thanks to my partner, have a nice hunting/shooting shack to sit in with a heater for when the weather turns nasty! It overlooks a six acre food plot that he put in there just for the shack.

Also, for the first time in my, life I'll be hunting the entire initial two weeks of the season! (except for the 20th drs. appointment) Hoping to lift my spirits some more, after a very difficult time over the summer. Hunting, and being in the woods, has always helped me sort things out.

Wishing you all the very best of luck! Enjoy the good times. And keep safe out there.

I’ve been in camp since Friday. Did some duck hunting and then built a new blind on one of the ponds. My buddy shot a big bodied buck we think it was on the way down. Rack not huge, but it was heavy.  One more of our lifelong buddies joins us tonight for dinner and the rest arrive tomorrow other than my brother who arrives early Friday. I’ve been sitting in various stands with my Hoyt and haven’t seen a decent buck in range yet. Passed plenty of ladies and small bucks. Gun will be different.

We have freshly cut corn on two sides of the property I will be rifle hunting, so hopefully we have plenty of deer movement. Strange rut year so far.

For the most part yes, 1 more bow hunt tomorrow.  I got a phone call last Friday or Saturday that one of the per diem nurses was willing to pick up my shift this Saturday so I could have it off.  So I won’t be missing opening day this year like I thought.

brother is coming into town and we haven’t hunted in years together so I’ll be putting him up in one of my good spots.

I will be running my single shot H&R in 30-06 like every year.  Tracking/drives this year will be with my late FIL 32 Winchester special or the Ithaca model 37.

UPDATE:

I checked the wind for Saturday here in 8F and it looks like it will be coming out of the NW so that means I will be taking out Ol' trusty, the Mossburg 12ga. w/ Winchester XP3 sabots. I'm waiting for a good WSW wind to sit in the new "Swamp Stand" where I can break out the 742 WoodsMaster in 30-06 to reach out a little further.
