‘Twas a much simpler time when we were restricted to shotguns with slugs.  I noted this spent hull at the base of a multi time proven steel ladder stand this morning, a reminder of the “old” days when pumpkin balls ruled the roost.

Some might say this is litter but I’d say no, far from it.  Let’s call it “History”.     :)

You can’t beat the old Remington sluggers, especially in 16 ga:
IMG_0566.thumb.jpeg.cbf32a83327398019e9f9e52d66ca4e6.jpegI ain’t seen a deer in two solid days of gun hunting plus a day of crossbow before that.  Maybe I’ll break out the old Ithaca 37 tomorrow, for my afternoon hunt, and load up with them for a little change of pace.

I’m in a shotgun only area and usually I only use the Smoothbore Ithaca deerslayer on real cold days, when my rifled Marlin 512 tends freeze up, and fail to fire.

I recovered that “antker ornament” slug from last deer that I fired grandpa’s old Ithaca at.  It double lunged him on his old farm , from 75 yards, but did not penetrate all the way thru the hide on the exit side.  It fell out when I was skinning him.  I’ll be hunting there again tomorrow afternoon.

I fired a second shot at that buck as he darted off, which must have been a clean miss.  I could only find one of the empties, when I returned to the scene a few days later, so there’s a 50/50 chance that’s not the same one that held the 20 cent slug when it was in the box.

I think I have about (10) boxes of those 16 ga sluggers left.  I bought a case, at a going out of business sale in Brewerton, about 25 years ago for $ 1 per box.

That old building now houses our favorite Reuben joint, The Brewer Union Cafe, and rarely do we drive by there without stopping for some of those:

Found quite a collection when I cleaned up the brush and briars around an old wooden stand we don’t use anymore. It was history-there were Remingtons, Winchesters, BRI, Lightfields, and probably some other brands. We shot a lot of deer from that stand over a 25 year time period.  Built an enclosed hut 20 yards away from it.

I'm constantly finding them as well. The yellow iwinchester 5s and 6s are from my small game and turkey hunts, but I find just as many from years and prior owners past in all sorts of variety. It's always kinda cool.

I normally enjoy finding them and even if they end up being mine or my buddy’s. Had one a few years ago with a 12g Hornady slug at the base of one of my stands. I wasn’t thinking much of it until I realized that neither of us use 12g slug guns and it was on top of the leaf litter with the fresh H logo stamped. That stand had only been there 2-3 seasons at that point.

Still never figured out who it was lol.
