I’m sure this has covered before, but it is a subject of debate locally, and I just saw it being debated in the comments on a YouTube video.

Is a blaze orange hat sufficient to meet the requirement or is hat and coat/ vest required under the law?

Blaze orange camo also counts the same as pure blaze orange, as long as it’s more than 50 % blaze orange.  I just learned that this year, so I’ve been hunting with my old blaze orange camo jacket and my favorite regular camo Woolrich hat.

I haven’t even  seen a deer while wearing that combo since the start of gun season though, so I think I’ll go back to the red plaid Woolrich jacket and pants that my wife got me at an antique shop last year, with solid blaze orange hat tomorrow.  Maybe that will change my luck.

Thank you for the responses. I was quite sure I had read the regulations correctly,  but a few guys are convinced that a coat and vest were needed. Thanks again.

Regulations to Keep Hunters Safe

New York is one of the safest states in the nation for deer and bear hunting. Regulations have been established to help ensure that strong safety record continues, and to reduce the likelihood for hunting-related shooting incidents.

Under these regulations deer and bear hunters are:

  1. Required to wear fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink clothing while hunting with a firearm. Any person who is accompanying someone hunting deer or bear with a firearm must also wear fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink clothing. The clothing must be:
    • a minimum of two hundred fifty square inches of solid fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink material worn above the waist and visible from all directions; or
    • a minimum of two hundred fifty square inches of patterned fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink consisting of no less than fifty percent fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink worn above the waist and visible from all directions; or
    • a hat or cap with no less than fifty percent of the exterior consisting of solid fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink material and visible from all directions.

I don’t mind the vest.   The orange hat I don’t care for.

Actually one of my hats triggers a forum member…..,I try not to display it.

I won't lie.. I wear a orange hat to my stand, flip it to camo, and flip it back to orange when walking out.  But I only hunt private that is very difficult to access unless obviously.

Pretty sure there's a square inch requirement for the vest, I think a hat is sufficient but would have to check the regulations to be legal. During gun I always end up wearing both. Down here in certain spots at minimum I wear an orange hat, sometimes the vest also depending on if I'm going to run into small game or waterfowl hunters.

A good idea I know.   I only do it because my head is always the thing moving when sitting and feel that that’s what the deer are going to see, regardless of what all the years and years worth of eyeball studies have shown.   👁️
