Ok hear me out. Yes maybe I'm 🥜
2 yrs ago I bought new hunting clothes for the first time in ages (underarmour). Since then I have had a hell of a time keeping any damn deer from winding me. I wash the hell outta them, store them in a tote and so on.
I either smell like an old man or maybe the clothes fabric and or blend of fabric ain’t no good.
Yrs ago I used wool with good success which made me wonder if its the clothes.

Anyone ever come across any study on best fabrics for hunting?

I am thinking about upgrading to sitka wool blend base layers and code of silence wool camo clothing that I saw Bill Winke promoting recently.

Save your money.  Deer will still smell you.

If you pm me your email Ill forward you an email from John Eberhart on scent control. You can also watch his youtube video's which he gives his email and follow up with him directly. There are like 8 attachments otherwise i would just screenshot them.

He says he could careless about wind because of his confidence in his scent control. He also has the mounts to backup his thoughts.

He hunts UPI of Michigan so its not like hes cherry picking where he hunts. Love his youtube interviews.

Anyone who wants the email just send me a pm.

Another goal is to get better, warmer stuff so I don’t need 10layers of clothes.
Heated vest is in order as well. Hunting rednecks with heaters has made me soft lol.

Love my heated vest.   What's the bag limit on rednecks? :P

I'll take the non-crusty old man shot at this for you.

Is playing the wind the best bet? Of course. Do you have stands like me where deer come from all directions and deer sometime come from the direction they shouldn't? Well then you want to do what you can to minimize scent. Notice I didn't say eliminate. But I do think you can minimize your scent with regards to how far your cone travels and in some ways "mute" it so that it may appear to be an older scent. We've all probably watched deer show up minutes after we head in or out of the woods on our cams walking right behind us. I believe they have a feel for time of scent.

Anyhow,

I'm assuming you're not just worried about your clothes and you're doing all or some of the following:

Washing with scent free soap (doesn't need to be buck on a bottle, but scent free). These guys make soap, shampoo, hair gel etc etc. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003LZS39Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

On off days consider using scent free stuff too if you can and just try and avoid anything that your skin will absorb, especially deodorant and lotion

Scent free deodorant. Again, doesn't have to be buck on bag

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G71M8DS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Store all yourself in a tote. Use a carbon odor absorber inside or ozone between hunts. Spray your smelly areas like arm pits and stuff with a scent killer spray. Hang your stuff between hunts to let them air out, but not in a spot where they'll absorb cooked food odors, wife's candles, oils and solvents. I actually bought a wardrobe thing for the bedroom and hang it all inside with an ozone generator

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09RZH9R1B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Consider your bath towel and bed sheets. Again, don't need to buy hunter stuff, but use tide free and clear. You don't want to do all this scent control stuff and then just rub down or lay in stuff that has fabric softener stink all over it.

Keep your truck clean, but clean with not stinky stuff. Consider being all nice and clean and then getting in a truck where cigs were smoked or McDonalds wrappers are giving off stink. You can buy a truck ozone generator too.

Dont wear your outer layers or boots in your truck. This is a huge one. Have a tote or bag in your truck for your outer layers, hats, gloves, bags etc. Put them on when you park and put your boots on then. Spray down with scent killer. And for the love of God don't be that guy filling up his truck wearing your realtree jump suit.

Speaking of outer layers. Don't wash them. Wash everything at the beginning of the season. Air them out for days and just leave them alone for the season. On a side note, try not to put any of your gear in the dryer if you can. I even take mine off when gutting so they don't need to be washed. Obviously if it's cold as balls you gotta do what you gotta do.

Oh and to your question haha. Merino wool. I wear a layer of scentlock and I know it doesn't hurt, but I'm not sure it does a ton to help either, but at the least it's another layer to keep me warm. But overall merino wool doesn't absorb stink, it's breathable and warm. First lite is probably the most popular producer but it's expensive.

There will be some naysayers of all this and that's fine but I can proudly claim that I've had many deer downwind of me and haven't been blown at in years. So take that for it's worth and of course, do you.

Extra side note. Gun season and bow season are different for me. I'm not nearly as anal during gun as I am during bow, but I'm still not out there smoking cigs in the stand. *insert member here who knew farmer johnny who wore blue jeans, smelled like oil and smoke and drank in the stand and blah, blah, blah. Farmer johnny has some good f'n land and he doesn't bow hunt.

It can't hurt to go scent free as much as possible, but your skin is constantly shedding and deer can smell your breath too. You'd be surprised what a dog can smell, and a deer can smell waaaay better than a dog. I don't believe you're ever going to fool a mature bucks nose every time. Just because a deer is downwind doesnt mean it'll smell you. I learned more about scent cones and scenting conditions since I got a pointing dog. many different nuances that can effect if a deer will wind you

I always turn my hunting clothes inside out when they get washed. Especially the base layers.

As stated by the others above, there are some things you can do to help minimize your scent. But nothing we can do to totally eliminate it. The deer will smell us no matter what, when they are downwind. But to what degree?? Depends on the individual deer sometimes I think. I hunt mostly from the ground. And many times I've had to put down my smoke to shoot a deer. Other times, I've seen deer stop in their tracks 100+ yards out, and obviously wind me. It's all part of deer hunting. You can do everything possible to be as scent free as you can be. But sometimes. you can smell like an old billy goat, and they will walk right to you.

Ya just do the best you can to mostly have the wind in your favor. That's about the best we can do to avoid being scented by deer.

deer have 70 million more receptors than a dog and like 250 million more than us.
